Windows virtualization use rights coming to CSP

We’re exceptionally proud that Windows 10, the most secure Windows ever, offers the widest range of device form factors and the greatest breadth of input options with support for touch, pen, gesture, and voice. Customers choose Windows 10 knowing that they can purchase a great new business PC for just a few hundred dollars, an incredible Surface Pro or Surface Book device for the ultimate in business productivity, or build their own custom rig part-by-part to meet any budget.

For some business customers, Windows virtualization is the solution that best meets their productivity, security, and IT infrastructure needs. This may mean PCs connecting to Windows client VMs running on dedicated or multi-tenant hardware enabling users to freely move from device to device, through to scenarios where a particular app or data set requires an additional layer of separation from the end-user device achieved through virtualization. The common factor here is choice and it’s one of the main reasons our customers and partners choose Windows 10.

Today, we’re making two announcements that provide our business customers with greater choice.
The first is that virtualization use rights will be coming to Windows 10 subscriptions in the cloud solution provider (CSP) program starting in September, with the flexibility to host in both Azure or with 3rd party hosting partners. And the second announcement is a new certification program for 3rd party hosting partners that wish to host virtual machines (VMs) licensed via CSP subscriptions.

Virtualization is not for every customer and so we’re creating offerings with and without virtualization use rights to ensure customers have the choice to subscribe to the solution that best meets their needs while not paying for rights they don’t require.

Beginning September 6th, 2017, customers will be able to choose from five subscription offerings in the CSP program with Windows 10 virtualization use rights, enabling Windows VMs to be hosted in Azure or with a qualified multitenant hosting partner:

  • Windows 10 Enterprise E3 will be available with or without virtualization use rights
  • Windows 10 Enterprise E5 will be updated to include virtualization use rights
  • A new Windows 10 Enterprise E3 VDA offering will be created for customers that require access to Windows VMs on non-Windows Pro devices
  • Customers purchasing or already subscribed to Microsoft 365 Enterprise (formerly known as Secure Productive Enterprise) via CSP will automatically receive Windows 10 virtualization use rights at no extra cost

Compute and consumption charges may apply based on VM use.

Surface Laptop and Surface Pro available today in markets around the world

Surface family device shot, from left to right shown, the new Surface Pro, Surface Book, Surface Studio, and Surface Laptop in Platinum color.

Today, we are excited to launch the new Surface Pro and Surface Laptop and bring our full family of Surface products to more markets than ever before. When I look at the journey we have been on since we launched the first Surface nearly five years ago, I am amazed at how far the product family has come. With Surface Pro, we created a new category and challenged the status quo of the laptop. With every Surface release since we have continued to push the boundaries of existing categories – bringing more power, more pixels and more versatility to help people work how they want, where they want.

From the professional that seeks inspiration out in the world and wants to capture it, to the student traveling from class to dorm room to library, we all desire tools that allow us to bring ideas to life wherever we choose. This is why we build Surface products, and this is why we’ve expanded the Surface family with beautiful and powerful devices that reflect the individual using them.

Surface Laptop

People are already falling in love with Surface Laptop. The rich, deep colors draw you into an experience that is warm and inviting. The blend of beauty and performance hits all the right notes without compromising the things required to keep you productive, like all-day battery life, incredible display quality, and portability. Even the Alcantara® material covering the keyboard balances its elegance with a clever design that resists spills and absorption. Every detail on this product has been thought through.

This meticulous attention extends to the software as well. Surface Laptop is made for Windows 10 S and the best of Microsoft’s products and services like Office and OneDrive. Windows 10 S ensures that your device is always up to date, and because Microsoft verifies every app in the Windows Store, you don’t have to worry whether an application is legit or malicious. You get the benefit of superior performance and streamlined security. To learn more about getting started with Windows 10 S, visit this blog post.

New apps arrive in the Windows Store all the time – in fact, we recently announced Spotify will come to the Windows Store this summer. We also recently launched SoundCloud Beta and will see iTunes in the Windows Store in the coming months. If you need an app that isn’t yet available in the Windows Store, you can easily switch to Windows 10 Pro at no additional cost until Dec. 31, 2017.

And, for a limited time, Surface Laptop comes with an offer for a one-year subscription to Office 365 Personal and 1TB of free storage on OneDrive*, giving you full access to Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote.

Surface Laptop colors available in more markets

We’re also excited to announce that we are making all four Surface Laptop colors available in 17 new markets over the coming months. Burgandy, Cobalt Blue, and Graphite Gold will join Platinum as options available in Australia, Austria, Canada, China, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, HK, Ireland, Japan, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, and the UK.

Visit Surface.com to learn more about available colors and pre-orders in your country.

The new Surface Pro

Also available today, the new Surface Pro is the perfect balance of versatility and performance. We wanted this product to be the laptop you can bring with you anywhere since you never know when or where inspiration will strike.

We’ve redesigned this game-changing form factor from the inside out. While the refined exterior may look familiar, this is a new generation of Surface Pro, offering up to 13.5 hours of battery life so you can work and create all day on the go and over 2.5x more power than Surface Pro 3. It runs Windows 10 Pro and Office, and it can handle the powerful desktop apps you crave, without compromising the thin and light form that has defined Surface Pro since we launched the first device five years ago. We’ve also made incredible progress with the Surface Pen. This is our most natural and responsive Pen yet. You can read all about how we’ve quadrupled the pressure sensitivity over our previous version, or how we dropped latency to milliseconds while adding tilt functionality. This new Surface Pen pushes the boundaries of the digital and analog worlds, bringing a fluid real-to-life inking experience. Every stroke, every line, shows up as intended, even the finest of touches.

The new Surface Pro in Studio Mode

With Surface Pen, touch, and on-screen support of Surface Dial, Surface Pro becomes a mobile creative studio that offers unparalleled versatility and performance.

Surface Pro is available now with LTE coming later this year.

Surface Studio expands to more markets

Surface Studio

People around the world have been asking us when they can get Surface Studio. This device has sparked the imagination of some of the world’s most creative individuals. We heard you. After recent expansion to Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, we are proud to share that Surface Studio will be available starting today in Austria, China, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, and the UK.

Meet the new Surface Pro

The Surface team never stops growing and learning. We listen to our customers, asking them what will help them better create and be more productive. Their input guides us to discover and build new ways to streamline and enhance creative processes – helping people use one device instead of two, eliminating the need for pen and paper, removing barriers so their ideas can flow freely.

We know that customers love the flexibility and versatility of the Surface Pro. In fact, Surface Pro 4 users are more likely to recommend their device than iPad and MacBook users.** But we’re not complacent – we know in order to live up to the expectations of our customers, we must continue to improve and better deliver on our promise on performance, mobility, and versatility – while improving what people already love about the iconic Surface Pro line.

And I think you’ll be very excited to meet the newest member of the family – the new Surface Pro:

Meet Surface Pro

The new Surface Pro is gorgeous. The design, the clean lines and curved edges are beautiful to see and touch. Surface Pro continues the iconic look and feel of previous Surface Pros, but has been completely redesigned from the inside out. We’ve optimized every millimeter, with over 800 new custom parts and used 99% of the space inside the device – to give people exactly what they need to work and create anytime, anywhere.

You can leave your charger at home because Surface Pro is packed with up to 13.5 hours of battery life.*** That’s 50% more than Surface Pro 4 and 35% more battery life than an iPad Pro. From home to work and back again, Surface Pro is there for you. This is a powerhouse laptop with 2.5 times more computing performance than the Surface Pro 3 and 1.7 times the compute of iPad Pro. The improved Surface Pro hinge has a full 165-degree range of motion, letting you immerse yourself in “Studio Mode”, an angle inspired by the Surface Studio, perfect for writing, sketching, and drawing on the go.

The new Surface Pro

The new Surface Pro is our lightest Surface Pro ever, starting at just 1.7lbs and 8.5mm thin. It’s lighter than the bag that you carry it in.

With a powerful 7th generation Intel Core processor it can handle almost anything you throw at it, but even with all that power, you can be as inconspicuous as you want with Surface Pro, it’s the quietest Surface yet, with no fan on the Core™ m3 and the i5 devices. In fact, this is the first i5 ever with fan-less architecture. And at an unprecedented 18dB, even the core i7 can’t be heard. So, if you’re working at home, you don’t have to worry about your family getting disturbed by the noise of a fan while they’re trying to watch a movie.

Surface Pro is not only softer acoustically, it’s also visually softer. Our cameras are designed to fade into the bezel giving Surface Pro an inviting, sleek, and streamlined look.

Surface Pro’s high-resolution 12.3” PixelSense™ Display with 267ppi and 3:2 aspect ratio went further this time. Surface Pro’s PixelSense Display has an impressive 50% more pixels than a 12” MacBook. We developed custom silicon, the PixelSense™ Accelerator, to really enhance color. Your colors will be more vibrant, precise, and impactful than ever before, and just like with Studio, we’ve provided a color-switcher, so you can go from SRGB to enhanced color in seconds.

The advancements in battery life, performance, pen and ink aren’t the end. We wanted to ensure Surface Pro was a transformative device – so we also have added LTE Advanced, available in units shipping later this year. This combination of performance, battery, sleek design and LTE has never been done before in this light and thin of a package. Now people can work, study, and collaborate online, from anywhere.

Tools that help you create and be more productive

At Surface, we believe that creativity fuels productivity, so we build devices and accessories designed to help you bring your ideas to life and put them into action.

Not only does Surface Pro work with on-screen Surface Dial, it was also designed with the new Surface Pen, our most natural and responsive pen yet, with over 4096 pressure points, only 21 milliseconds of latency and new tilt functionality. It gives people, from artists to mobile professionals, a more fluid and real-to-life inking experience.  Over two times more accurate, with four times more pressure sensitivity than the original Surface Pen, we engineered Surface Pen to be the fastest pen ever*****.  And with the lowest parallax in the industry, we bring your ink and your content closer to your fingertips.

When all combined with our PixelSense Accelerator, the writing experience feels like writing on paper, picking up every expression of the pen and reacting to the subtlest of artistic movements. Artists can paint on Surface and feel like they are painting on parchment, as Surface Pen has almost no latency and gives you the ability to do tilt and shading on Surface Pro. For those at work, you will feel like you are taking notes in your Moleskin notebook with your favorite pen.

Never has there been a digital pen like this one. We couldn’t be more excited for Surface fans to use it, and to help you coordinate your personal look, Surface Pen is available in Platinum, Burgundy, Cobalt Blue and Black.

This device ships with the latest Creators Update from Windows, so you can take advantage of the new 3D and inking tools available in the update while businesses can easily run the programs they need including the full Microsoft Office suite and legacy desktop software.

The new Surface Pen and Office transform the inking experience

The new Surface Pen is only as good as the software behind it, which is why we’ve worked with Office to create new inking features that take full advantage of the hardware technology within Surface Pro and Surface Pen. These include customizable pen tips that roam with you across all your Office 365 apps, regardless of device, and amazing support for tilt and shading across all Office 365 apps.

We’re also excited to announce a new app, Microsoft Whiteboard on Surface, which enables simultaneous collaboration and live multi-device inking across the family of Surface devices. It’s a magical experience that you have to see to believe – it will change the way you collaborate at work and with family and friends.

This is just the beginning of the integration you see between Surface and Office moving forward as we look at more ways to make Surface fans more productive and help enable them to work the way they want. Read more about our partnership with Office in Kirk’s blog here.

The best Surface Pro keyboard. Ever.

With the new Signature Type Covers, you get the best Surface Pro keyboard ever, delivering a high-quality scissor mechanism to provide you a consistent and stable typing experience, with 1.3 mm of key travel for faster and more accurate typing. Typing on the new Signature Pro Type Covers is easier, more, comfortable, more accurate, better sounding, and easier to do without looking than the MacBook and iPad Pro.

Luxurious Alcantara® material covers the new type covers. The improved keyset for a laptop-class typing experience and enhances the natural allure and warmth of Surface Pro. The soft touch feel helping you immerse yourself in your work.

The new Signature Type Cover is available in three rich tone-on-tone colors to match your personal style: Platinum, Burgundy, Cobalt Blue. The Alcantara® fabric is treated with a high-performance polyurethane coating to resist spills, which means the fabric is not only soft and inviting, but also easy to care for.

Finally, we know there is a time for creating on the go and there is a time when you need to be back at home base. Using Surface Dock, you can easily turn Surface Pro into a full desktop workstation with up to two 4K monitors and four additional USB ports.

Surface Pro and Surface Pro Signature Type Cover are available for pre-order today and will ship on June 15th worldwide; Surface Pen will be available in the coming weeks****. Surface Pro starts at $799.99 USD.

Announcing Windows 10 China Government Edition and the new Surface Pro

Today in Shanghai, China we announced that with strong support of CETC and Microsoft, CMIT, our joint venture has now developed Windows 10 China Government Edition for China government customers and Lenovo will be one of the first OEM partners to preinstall Windows 10 China Government Edition; introduced the most versatile laptop—the new Surface Pro—with up to 13.5 hours of battery life; revealed the new Surface Pen, twice as accurate as the previous version with more fluid writing, drawing, and tilt; celebrated the launch of Microsoft HoloLens in China; and shared that Project Scorpio will launch in China later this year.

It is an honor and privilege today to be in China—the center place of some of the world’s most life-changing inventions like paper, the abacus, and the world’s first movable type printing press. These inventions have empowered each of us to be more creative and productive.

The Windows ecosystem is thriving around the world thanks to the many contributions from teams in China–silicon engineers, systems engineers, software developers, so many other technology partners.  Every day our Chinese partners Lenovo, Xiaomi, and Huawei are building new devices and experiences that light up Windows 10 for our customers.  Together, we’re inspiring a generation of creators to do more, create more, be more productive, and have more fun.

Today, we made several Windows 10, Surface, HoloLens, and Xbox announcements to empower the creator in each of us.

Windows 10 China Government Edition

Windows 10 China Government Edition

For more than two decades, Microsoft has had the distinct honor to work in China, learning and advancing technology together. Over the last two years, we have earnestly cooperated with the Chinese government on the security review of Windows 10. The Chinese government has the highest standards for security. The tools they choose to use for productivity and creativity must meet the highest levels of quality.

Today on stage I was honored to welcome Ms. Beth Xu, CEO of CMIT—the joint venture between Microsoft and CETC—to share that CMIT has developed a version of Windows 10 specifically for the Chinese government and state-owned entities.

Three government customers are the first to pilot Windows 10 China Government Edition – at the national level with China Customs, at the regional level with the City of Shanghai (EITC), and the state-owned enterprise with Westone Information Technology.

The Windows 10 China Government Edition is based on Windows 10 Enterprise Edition, which already includes many of the security, identity, deployment, and manageability features governments and enterprises need.  The China Government Edition will use these manageability features to remove features that are not needed by Chinese government employees like OneDrive, to manage all telemetry and updates, and to enable the government to use its own encryption algorithms within its computer systems.

We also announced that Lenovo will be one of the first OEM partners to preinstall Windows 10 China Government Edition on new devices.

It’s an honor to have this partnership with the China government, CETC, CMIT, and Lenovo.

Windows 10 is the most secure version of Windows ever, and we’re humbled that governments around the world like the U.S. Department of Defense, the Australian Health Department, and the Italian Ministry of Defense are choosing Windows 10 for their security, and now the Chinese government has a version of Windows created specifically for it.  We are committed to work tirelessly to meet their needs.

Introducing the new Surface Pro—the most versatile laptop

The new Surface Pro

Surface has always been about empowering people to be more creative, collaborative, and productive. We were inspired to create the 2:1 category with Surface Pro 3, to redefine the ultimate laptop with Surface Book, to transform the desktop into a digital canvass with the Surface Studio, and to deliver the perfect balance of portability, performance, and elegance with Surface Laptop.

Today, we unveiled the next generation of the iconic Surface Pro line. The new Surface Pro delivers up to 13.5 hours of battery life—50% more battery life than the Surface Pro 4 and 35% more than an iPad Pro. It’s more than 2.5 times faster than Surface Pro 3.

Surface Pro is not only a powerhouse laptop, but also a mobile creative studio with a vibrant 12.3” PixelSense touch display that supports the Surface Dial and the new Surface Pen – the fastest pen ever. Twice as accurate as the previous version, the new Surface Pen when coupled with the new Surface Pro, sets the industry standard for faster, more fluid writing and drawing.

We are making the creative power of the new Surface Pen available in the world’s most powerful productivity suite: Microsoft Office. Today, we showed off new inking features in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint that include a customizable gallery of your favorite pens, pencils, and highlighters that roams with you as a personalized setting across Office apps and devices, along with support for tilt and shading with the new Surface Pen.

These capabilities will begin to release to Office 365 subscribers in June, including the more than 100 million monthly active commercial users and 26 million consumer subscribers. Additional inking experiences will continue to roll out in the future, including the new Microsoft Whiteboard app, which offers a limitless canvas for creativity and collaboration with simultaneous inking between multiple people across the world. With Microsoft Whiteboard, people will be able to collaborate on ideas and projects across an expanded set of ink-enabled Windows 10 devices later this year, with exclusive capabilities for Office 365 subscribers.

The new Surface Pen

Starting at $799 USD, the new Surface Pro allows people to customize their experience with an array of color-on-color options for the new Surface Pro Signature Type Cover, the new Surface Pen, and the Microsoft Surface Arc Mouse.

The new Surface Pro will launch on June 15, 2017, in 25 markets. Pre-orders for the new Surface Pro and Surface Pro Signature Type Cover begins later today in select markets at Microsoft Store, Microsoft.com, BestBuy.com, and JD.com where available. The new Surface Pen will be available in the coming weeks.

Surface Studio is coming to 12 new markets. Preorders for Surface Studio and Surface Laptop begin today in China and start shipping on June 15. To celebrate the launch of Surface in China, one of our important consumer partners, JD.com, will run a Microsoft Super Surface Day on their website and mobile app on May 24 in China. JD.com and Microsoft Surface will also be featured in New York’s iconic Times Square.

HoloLens launches in China today

HoloLens is now shipping to developers in China

At Microsoft, we want to empower creators to break down the barriers between physical and virtual worlds.  That’s why we built Windows 10 to be the most complete platform across the broadest range of mixed reality devices and experiences.

In December at WinHec in Shenzen, China we announced that HoloLens—the world’s first untethered holographic computer with endless possibilities to unleash people’s creativity—was submitted for government approval in China.

Today, I had the pleasure of announcing that HoloLens is now shipping to developers in China.

Since 2016, over 22,000 developers have imagined over 70,000 transformative concepts on Hololens, leading to over five million hours where people were immersed in holographic experiences.  On behalf of the Windows Mixed Reality team at Microsoft, I want to welcome China developers to the family. I can’t wait to see the wave of new creativity you will unleash.

Project Scorpio coming to China later this year

Project Scorpio, the most powerful console ever, will be available this year for Xbox fans in China.

We were honored to be the first company to bring a next-generation game console to China in 2014 with the launch of Xbox One. Today we announced that Project Scorpio, the most powerful console ever, will be available this year for Xbox fans in China.

Games perform better on Project Scorpio. With 40 percent more power than any other console and True 4K gaming, we can’t wait for fans in China to get their hands on it later this year.

I’m also excited to announce that we’re bringing the next season of the Forza Racing Championship, the most inclusive racing competition in gaming, to ChinaJoy in Shanghai this summer. Forza is the highest acclaimed, best-selling racing franchise of this generation, and has been a fan favorite since launching in China.

And finally, I’m happy to share that NetEase—our partner bringing Minecraft to China—will offer two more betas in July on the way to a beautiful Windows 10 and Xbox One experience.

With Windows 10, Surface, HoloLens, and gaming we want to inspire a new generation of creativity everywhere in the world.  I can’t wait to see what you will create next.

Thanks,

-Terry

MARS future looking sweeter with Microsoft technology

Whether it’s grabbing gum at checkout, satisfying late-afternoon hunger with a Milky Way ®, or even buying pet food for that unconditional loving best friend, we’ve all been surrounded by MARS products and might not even know it! As a century-old family-owned business, MARS has certainly found its recipe for success. The company has made $35 billion in global sales by putting people first in everything they do. With 60 brands across six segments from food, drinks, chocolate, confectionary (gum), pet care and symbioscience, the company is more than just sweet treats. MARS understands a long-term vision that is committed to product, technology and workplace innovation based on the company’s Five Principles– Quality, Responsibility, Mutuality, Efficiency and Freedom.

MARS has long valued a workplace that encourages mutuality and open communication among all Associates. As MARS looks at new products, services and business units to accelerate its growth, it knows a digital transformation would not only bolster its already collaborative and productive work environment but also attract and retain employees who expect a modern workplace. MARS is deploying Windows 10 to its more than 80,000 associates who work across 400 locations in 78 countries. Windows 10, along with Office 365 and Microsoft Azure, is enabling MARS to digitally transform how its Associates not only work with each other, but how they get work done.

“At MARS, we meet our goals,” says David Boersma, Senior Manager for End User Technologies, MARS, Incorporated. “This company will continue to accelerate its growth organically and through acquisition and we’re using Windows 10 to build the flexibility and capabilities we need to get there.”

— David Boersma, Senior Manager for End User Technologies, MARS, Incorporated

MARS has deployed Windows 10 to help reduce the cost and time associated with large-scale deployments. With a company that spans multiple geographies, its previous upgrades had taken up to four years and cost $4 million. According to Boersma, “Windows 10, on the other hand, has been substantially quicker and with less cost.” The “Windows as a Service” model has allowed MARS to skip the lengthy upgrade cycle which has resulted in accelerated Windows 10 deployment. Originally, MARS set out to deploy Windows 10 to 5,000 Associates in 12 months. Although, it has already exceeded its goal by 110 percent by deploying Windows 10 to 12,500 Associates and is now looking to scale to all Associates by 2018.

By embracing the “Windows as a Service” model, MARS has been able to refocus the time and energy of its IT department from chasing the next operating system update to strengthening its collaborative culture through Office 365, including Yammer and Skype for Business.

“Rather than tying up investment and time to just get through the next product release, we can focus on enhancing key aspects of our culture like mutuality at a digital level, across divisions, borders and time zones – so we can preserve what is special about MARS and help our Associates be more productive and agile.”

— Jonathan Chong, Digital Workplace and Corporate Systems Director at MARS, Incorporated

MARS associates collaborate while using their Windows 10 devices.

MARS associates collaborate while using their Windows 10 devices.

This highly collaborative company has helped create a place where many associates stay 25 years. Although, with its new goal set, MARS wanted to digitally transform not only how its associates work but also attract the next generation of workers.

“We invest a lot of money in attracting and retaining talent. These people now expect a modern, productive work environment and this includes the type of devices we provide and the tools they use at work every day. Products like Windows 10, Skype for Business and Yammer support our engagement and talent management strategies.”

— Paul L’Estrange, CTO and Vice President of Core Services, MARS, Incorporated

MARS Associates use Skype for Business to collaborate.

MARS Associates use Skype for Business to collaborate.

MARS is seeing the positive impact Skype for Business has had on its culture and Associate work-life balance. With Skype for Business, MARS has reduced travel, as Associates now use Skype for Business to tackle projects and resolve issues in real-time.

“We like a lot of human interaction and we’ve been able to use Skype for Business to help us increase that level of collaboration but not necessarily have the person fly half way around the planet. We’ve been able to reduce our overall travel which has been great from a cost perspective. But, we’ve helped positively impact people’s work life balance so they can spend more time at home yet they can still do the business that they need to do around the globe.”

— Joe Carlin, Technology Service Delivery Director, MARS, Incorporated

MARS is also seeing Associates quickly embrace Yammer, as another way to connect and share knowledge. Vittorio Cretella, CIO of MARS, Incorporated says Yammer is “taking down those walls around knowledge and making it accessible which is very valuable.”

MARS associate uses Windows 10 devices to conduct store walk-through.

MARS associate uses Windows 10 devices to conduct store walk-through.

Windows 10 provides MARS the flexibility with the types of devices its Associates and Senior Leaders can use to get work done whether at home, in the office or on the road. Senior Leaders and Associates can now use everything from Surface Pro to OEM devices to help fit their unique work styles. Previously, an associate conducting a store walk-through would have to juggle multiple devices and paper to make note of any product display issues. Once the Associate returned to the office, they’d connect with their peers to resolve the issue. This process could take several days to a week depending on their travel. Today, many issues can be resolved on the spot.

“By using Windows 10, MARS associates now finish things on the road instead of waiting until they get back to the office. For example, field associates use their Surface Pro devices in store walk-throughs, and if necessary, use Office 365 to connect with other team members and resolve display issues in one day instead of a week.”

— Joe Carlin, Technology Service Delivery Director, MARS, Incorporated

With a more on-the-go workforce, MARS has strengthened security and data protection for its Associates who are on their smartphones, tablets or their PCs from the office, at home or on the road. As a privately-owned company, MARS takes security seriously especially when it comes to its intellectual property. MARS has enabled Windows security features like BitLocker to encrypt data and Windows Defender to provide a strong layer of security and authentication.

To ensure MARS can do business securely in the cloud and fully realize its digital transformation, MARS has only just begun its journey with Microsoft Azure to enable greater efficiency and reliability. Currently, MARS has two global datacenters that run 85 percent of its business with one datacenter being 25 years old which requires significant cost resources and time to maintain. Now, MARS is currently testing a hybrid cloud model and recently moved its first live production application, a retail app, into Microsoft Azure as well as about 150 other workloads with the expectation to expand to 500-600 workloads over the next year.

We’re excited to see that with Windows 10, Microsoft Azure, and Office 365, MARS is able to foster a modern and productive workplace that will support the company’s ambitious growth strategy. For more detailed information about MARS’ deployment of Microsoft technologies, please check out the case study and video here.

How to get a replacement AC power cord for your Surface Pro

Today, in consultation with safety regulators, we announced a voluntary replacement program for all Surface Pro AC power cords sold before March 15, 2015, in the U.S. and Canada and before July 15, 2015, in other markets where Surface is sold.  If the cord is wound too tightly, twisted or pinched over an extended period of time there is a potential risk for the AC cord– the cord that connects the power supply unit to the electrical socket – to overheat.

While there are no reports of serious injury, a small number of our customers have reported this issue and we are taking action to address by making free replacement cords available to all eligible customers. The safety of our customers is our top priority.

What does this mean for you?

Surface power cordIf you bought a Surface Pro, Surface Pro 2 or Surface Pro 3 in the above timeframe, we recommend you get a free replacement AC power cord from Microsoft as soon as possible. Big news for enterprise customers and Windows 10, tales from the cloud and a program manager’s inspiring story — Weekend Reading, Sept. 11 edition

The first full week of September brought plenty of interesting and uplifting news to distract us from the fact that summer is slowly drawing to a close. We’ve got all the highlights in this edition of Weekend Reading.

More than 75 million devices around the world are running Windows 10, a number likely to grow significantly now that Microsoft and Dell have an expanded partnership to bring premium Windows 10 devices — along with world-class services and support — to enterprise customers. The Surface Enterprise Initiative was unveiled Tuesday.

Dell will be the first partner to sell Surface Pro tablets and accessories next month through its North America commercial sales organization and later in the year on Dell.com/Work; other markets will follow in early 2016.

“We want to move people from needing, to choosing, to loving Windows and so do our partners,” said CEO Satya Nadella in a press release. “Our global enterprise customers have asked us to match the Surface Pro 3 and Windows 10 experience with enterprise-grade support and services – and our partnerships like this one with Dell will do just that.”

Later this year, you’ll be able to get the latest and greatest in intelligent customer engagement with Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2016. As the most comprehensive Microsoft Dynamics CRM upgrade ever, the new version, announced Tuesday, will have an enhanced Excel experience, next-generation Cortana integration and a host of other great improvements.

The 2016 version “will change the game in other areas as well, including intelligence, mobility and service,” writes Bob Stutz, corporate vice president of Microsoft Dynamics CRM, who says it marks “a milestone in the company’s efforts to reinvent productivity.”

The International Broadcasting Convention began Thursday in Amsterdam, and the conference vividly illustrates a shift that has taken hold of the media industry over the past few years: The cloud is everywhere. Media companies all over the world are adopting cloud strategies for not just on-demand video but also live sports events and entertainment, content management, editorial collaboration, audience analytics and much more.

As explained by Rainer Kellerhals, senior business development manager for Microsoft Worldwide Industry and Global Accounts, “Moving operations to the cloud allows companies to set up a new program or even a new channel in a very short timeframe — without investing tens of millions of dollars.”

Speaking of the cloud, Microsoft cloud technology is giving a big boost to a program in Texas that teaches moms about keeping babies and kids healthy through proper nutrition. The state’s previous information management system, implemented two decades ago, had outlived its usefulness.

The state agency is moving to a solution built on the Microsoft Government Cloud, an improvement that is expected to reduce coverage gaps and hardships for recipients, as well as making things much easier for caseworkers trying to give assistance.

Microsoft also announced a pair of acquisitions this week. The acquisition of Adallom, an innovator in cloud security, is “the latest example of Microsoft’s commitment to delivering innovative identity and security capabilities to our customers, across both on-premises and multiple clouds,” writes Cloud and Enterprise Marketing Corporate Vice President Takeshi Numoto.

Microsoft has also agreed to acquire VoloMetrix, a pioneer and leader in organizational analytics. “This acquisition will combine VoloMetrix’ experience, technology and track record of success with Office 365 and our previously announced Delve Organizational Analytics,” writes Rajesh Jha, corporate vice president of Outlook and Office 365.

Earlier this week we met Vidya Srinivasan, a hacker, teacher, classical singer and Microsoft program manager for OneDrive-SharePoint. While recognized for her versatility, Vidya knows all of her interests have a common goal: She’s always looking to help others.

She’ll co-chair Open Source Day this year at the Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing, leading a team of six people across the U.S. and Europe and working with eight open source organizations. You can read more about her inspiring story.

Just in time for the start of football season, NFL on Windows 10 is our App of the Week. Use it to track your favorite teams and fantasy players with personalized notifications of big plays on the field, and never miss a moment with in-game highlights on demand. Or find other useful options in this week’s five best new Windows Phone apps.

The week also brought updates to “Minecraft: Windows 10 Edition Beta” and “Minecraft: Pocket Edition,” and Marvel’s “The Avengers: Age of Ultron” is now available in the Windows Store. Fans of Press Play got to choose which game they’d like to see next from the Denmark-based developer, deciding on multiplayer action game “Project: Knoxville.”

In other app news, you can save big on Disney titles and in-app purchases during the Disney & Star Wars End of Summer Sale, or test your smarts to stay alive with such tasks as hurdling an electric fence and cleaning a whale’s teeth in “Dumb Ways to Die 2: The Games.”

5 best apps

And that’s a wrap of this week’s top news. Check back here every Friday for the latest edition of Weekend Reading.
