Gaming on Windows 10 – A Year’s Journey

Today, we’re celebrating the Windows 10 Anniversary Update, and commemorating the first birthday for our latest and greatest OS (July 29) – which, after just one year, lives on more than 350 million devices, ranging from PCs to mobile devices, Xbox One consoles and even HoloLens development kits.

Windows 10 gaming features

It turns out that a lot of those devices are playing games. In fact, more than 19 billion hours of gameplay were logged on Windows 10 in year one and games were the top app download category in the Windows Store, generating 32 percent of overall downloads and 85 percent of in-app purchases. It’s not just the Windows Store that’s seeing a boon from gaming on Windows 10 – players on Steam have adopted Windows 10 as their most-used operating system, reaching 44.46 percent usage.

A massively fun part of Windows has always been playing games, and that couldn’t be truer today with the combination of the Windows 10 Anniversary Update and the Xbox summer update that arrived last week. These updates continue our commitment to give gamers more choice in how and where they play.

I spoke with Kevin Unangst, senior director for PC gaming here at Team Xbox. Head over to Xbox Wire to read more and see a transcript of what we talked about, including some of our favorite parts of PC gaming with Windows 10 today.

Apple 12" MacBook Retina (2016 model)

Purchased on Sunday from Dixons Tax Free, it’s the 512Gb Core m5 model. Unmarked as you can imagine. Bought to replace my 2013rMBP but not sure it’s for me as beautiful as it is. Comes with official USB>USB C adapter, a felt case and Minix HDMI/Ethernet/USB3 charge through hub thing.

These are £1299 from Apple so I’m passing on the airport saving plus a couple of extras thrown in, returning to Currys/PCW is a hassle for me and gives someone else the chance to save a few ££. Will return…

HoloLens Development Edition Updates

In the four months since we began shipping Microsoft HoloLens to our developer and commercial partners, we’ve been absolutely amazed at the innovation shown by the creative people and companies building real solutions using HoloLens. From training aircraft mechanics and flight crews, to helping golf pros and fans get more out of their game, I’m inspired by the experiences you are creating.

In May, we announced the first major software update to Windows Holographic, and today, I’m excited to share our second major update: the Windows 10 Anniversary Update. This is our fastest and most reliable version yet. Some exciting changes are on tap with this release, as well as some new policies making it easier than ever for more developers to create the future of holographic computing.

We’ve fulfilled the orders for our first waves of developers, and today I’m pleased to announce that we’re expanding the program, making HoloLens Development Edition available to all developers and business customers in the United States and Canada. Developers looking to join our holographic journey can go to hololens.com and purchase up to five devices. No application required!

We’ve also heard that companies are looking for a solution they can confidently pilot and deploy in their enterprises, so today we are introducing the Microsoft HoloLens Commercial Suite, which includes the Development Edition hardware as well as enterprise features for added security and device management.  Check out this video to learn more about the HoloLens Commercial Suite:

Some of the Microsoft HoloLens Commercial Suite features include:

  • Kiosk mode. With HoloLens kiosk mode, you can limit which apps to run to enable demo or showcase experiences.
  • Mobile Device Management (MDM) for HoloLens. Your IT department can manage multiple HoloLens devices simultaneously using solutions like Microsoft InTune. You will be able to manage settings, select apps to install and set security configurations tailored to your organization’s need.
  • Identity. Azure Active Directory & next generation credentials with pin unlock.
  • Windows Update for Business. Controlled operating system updates to devices and support for long term servicing branch.
  • Data security. BitLocker data encryption and secure boot is enabled on HoloLens to provide the same level of security protection as any other Windows device.
  • Work access. Anyone in your organization can remotely connect to the corporate network through a virtual private network on a HoloLens. HoloLens can also access Wi-Fi networks that require credentials.
  • Windows Store for Business. Your IT department can also set up an enterprise private store, containing only your company’s apps for your specific HoloLens usage. Securely distribute your enterprise software to selected group of enterprise users.

Check out our documentation page for the full list of things we’ve been working on to make HoloLens even better for you.

By the way, it has been super exciting to see and play with all the holographic experiences you have been putting in the Windows Store.  Myself and the whole team have fun trying them out every week.  Please keep the feedback and holographic apps coming. When in doubt, you can find me on twitter @akipman.

Let’s continue to define the future of computing together!

Windows 10 Anniversary Update SDK Now Available! Windows Store Open for Submissions

Today I’m pleased to announce that following the Windows 10 Anniversary Update we have released the Windows 10 Anniversary Update SDK, build 14393 along with Visual Studio 2015 Update 3. The new SDK contains more than 2700 enhancements to the Universal Windows Platform allowing you to take advantage of our fastest growing OS ever and gives you access to the latest innovations in Windows 10 which are now available in the Anniversary Update. These updated APIs make it easier than ever for you to create more natural ways of interaction, like vision, writing, and speech into your apps and experiences. The Windows 10 Anniversary Update SDK delivers improvements to:

  • Windows Ink: A pen is a natural choice for apps that depend on analog input, such as sketching, animation and even signature capture. Now, with just two lines of code you can bring Windows Ink into your apps through the news InkCanvas and InkToolbar controls.
  • Cortana APIs: There is no easier way to interact with your computer than to talk to it, and Cortana brings you powerful features that you can use in your own apps. With the Windows 10 Anniversary SDK you can go further than simply adding voice controls to your apps, now with Cortana Actions you can drive increased user engagement by registering actions with Cortana that she will use to connect users to your apps at just the right time.
  • Windows Hello: Biometric authentication brings the magic of vision to apps and now with the Windows 10 Anniversary SDK, web developers can use Windows Hello in Edge to authenticate users with just a glance.
  • To find out more about these APIs and other enhancements in the Windows 10 Anniversary Update SDK visit Dev Center.

And we’re just getting started. With today’s launch we continue our goal to make Windows more open for all developers by providing you the tools you need to make Windows home no matter what platform you build for. Since //build my team and I have travelled the globe and met with thousands of developers and we have heard firsthand what is important to you. Among them, the promise of the Desktop Bridge to help you quickly and easily modernize your existing Win32/.NET apps, excitement to see real, native Bash running on Windows and Xamarin as a cross-platform development solution. We’re continuing to act on your feedback and offer more for cross-device developers, including these technologies:

  • Desktop Bridge (Project Centennial): The millions of developers using Win32 and .NET to build desktop apps can now get access to the benefits of the Universal Windows Platform and the Windows Store. Using the modern deployment technology of UWP, desktop apps can cleanly install, uninstall and update, as well as get full access to UWP APIs including Live Tiles, roaming storage, push notifications and more.
  • Bash Shell on Windows: We are pleased to deliver a top requested feature from users of popular command-line tools. You can now download the Bash shell from our partners at Canonical directly from the Windows Store. Now you can run native Bash and GNU/Linux command-line tools directly on the new Windows Subsystem for Linux.
  • Improved Tools and Bridges for iOS and Android Developers: Visual Studio now includes Xamarin tools built-in, ready to create apps for Windows and iOS and Android. In addition, our open source Windows Bridge for iOS enables iOS developers to bring Objective-C code into Visual Studio and compile it into a UWP app.

Windows Store Open for Submissions; Including Process for Submitting Desktop Bridge Apps

Starting today we are opening Dev Center and the Windows Store for submissions of apps built for PCs, phones and HoloLens, targeting the Windows 10 Anniversary Update SDK.

In addition, we will begin the process of accepting apps using the Desktop Bridge. While we build the pipeline into the Windows Store to publish these apps, our team will work directly with developers to get their converted apps and games into the Windows Store. Contact our team here if you are interested in submitting an app using the Desktop Bridge to the Windows Store.

Later this month, we’ll have a post on new Dev Center features and will share more detail on getting Xbox apps targeting the Windows 10 Anniversary Update SDK into the Windows Store.

Ready, Set, Build!

With the improvements in the Windows 10 Anniversary Update SDK there just isn’t a reason to wait. The Windows ecosystem is thriving – offering you an active and engaged audience of more than 350 million monthly active users. The Store is open for business and new innovations with Inking, Cortana and Edge will enable new experiences that simply aren’t possible on other platforms.

If you are not already building for Windows, download the Anniversary Update SDK today and get busy!

Thank you to our Windows developer community for your passion and creativity – we can’t wait to see what you come up with next! My team and I love to hear your feedback, and we use it to guide platform investments. Please keep the feedback coming using our Windows Developer Feedback UserVoice site.

With the Anniversary Update Cortana will be available above your lock screen so you can do things like ask questions, play music from your PC or set a reminder without unlocking your device. Cortana can save and recall key information across your devices, like your frequent flier number or where you parked at the airport. Gamers stay connected and enjoy more games

With the Anniversary Update, Cortana is now available on Xbox One in the U.S. and U.K. With Cortana, gamers can expect more from voice commands on Xbox. In addition to more commands and greater accuracy with natural language and text dictation, Cortana provides the ability to use a headset or Kinect. You’ll be able to use Cortana to find great new games, see what your friends are up to, start a party, accomplish common tasks, turn on your Xbox One if you’re using Kinect, and more. We’ll continue to build more Cortana features over time as part of our vision to have Cortana be your personal digital assistant for gaming. With Xbox Play Anywhere, shoppers can pre-order their favorite games before launch, then play on either their Windows 10 PC or Xbox One the day of availability. This gives gamers more options of where to play their favorite games.
