Windows Template Studio 1.6 released!

We’re extremely excited to announce the Windows Template Studio 1.6!
In this release, we added in app scheme launch, finalized our work for localization, massive improvements in accessibility, and started our work for Visual Basic support.
What’s new:
Full list of adjustments in the 1.6 release, head over to WTS’s Github.

New Pages:
Image Gallery
New Features:
Drag and drop source
Web to App Link
Template improvements:
Minor tweaks for Fluent
Discovered a few pages that set background color
Improvements to the Wizard:
Lots of under the hood bug fixes and code improvements
Much more Visual Basic engine work
Work for supporting multiple projects in a single solution
Work to support Prism
How to get the update:
There are two paths to update to the newest build.
Already installed: Visual Studio should auto update the extension. To force an update, Go to Tools->Extensions and Updates. Then go to Update expander on the left and you should see Windows Template Studio in there and click “Update.”
Not installed: Head to https://aka.ms/wtsinstall, click “download” and double click the VSIX installer.
Known issue
We are tracking an issue (#1532) when uninstalling / upgrading where you may get an error of “A value for ‘Component’ needs to be specified in the catalog.”
If you get this error, we need logs to help track this with the help of the Visual Studio team. We don’t know how to reproduce it, but we know a few people have hit this scenario.
We have how to capture these logs in the tracking issue on GitHub.
What else is cooking for next versions?
We love all the community support and participation. In addition, here are just a few of the things we are currently building out that will in future builds:
Visual Basic support (In nightly)
Prism support (In nightly)
Improved update system to help increase speed of startup and file size download
Improved user interface in-line with Visual Studio
Continued refinement with Fluent design in the templates
Ink templates
Improved Right-click->add support for existing projects
With partnership with the community, we’ve will continue cranking out and iterating new features and functionality. We’re always looking for additional people to help out and if you’re interested, please head to our GitHub at https://aka.ms/wts. If you have an idea or feature request, please make the request!

Long-form content finds a home at Microsoft’s Story Labs | Special Edition Ragan’s PR Daily Awards

Website

Crew of content creators found stories, people and ideas to share.

Winner: Microsoft News Center

Microsoft Story Labs epitomizes what a content-driven site can be. For that, it’s won first place in the “Website” category of PR Daily’s 2017 Content Marketing Awards.

Story Labs is all about long-form storytelling that doesn’t rub Microsoft in the reader’s face; rather, Microsoft’s technologies play a role in the stories but take a backseat to the stories themselves.

Story Labs is a “boutique internal agency and creative SWAT team within the company’s communications/marketing division,” composed of journalists, designers, producers, animators, artists and photographers devoted to “finding the most interesting stories, people, and ideas from across the company and sharing them with the world through best-in-class storytelling.”

Meandering through the site produces delightful surprises, such as an animated guide to blockchain, a look inside Microsoft’s Building 87 (which houses three futuristic hardware labs), a story on a Detroit wallpaper organization(which doesn’t mention Microsoft or any of its products, but shows one of the designers using a Microsoft computer in an image) and a visit with artist Hugh MacLeod (showcasing his illustrated guide to life at Microsoft).

Anybody looking for a model content portal should check out this website.

Congratulations to Steve Wiens, Thomas Kohnstamm, Michael Wann and Doug Dawson.

Virtual tools help explore computer science and robotics in the classroom |

I am sure everyone enjoyed Computer Science Education Week and its amazing focus on enabling the students of today to create the world of tomorrow. We live in an amazing time of technological progress. Every aspect of our lives is being shaped by digital transformation. However, with transformation comes disruption. There’s growing concern over job growth, economic opportunity, and the world we are building for the next generation. So, the real question is: How can technology create more opportunity not for a few, but for all?

This week we would love to focus on how to bring applied computer science through robotics into the classroom. The skill of programming is fundamental for structured, logical thinking and enables students to bring technology to life and make it their own. Oftentimes this can be a lofty goal when resources are limited, but there is room for a grounded, everyday approach.

Code Builder for Minecraft: Education Edition is an extension that allows educators and students to explore, create, and play in an immersive Minecraft world – all by writing code. Since they can connect their work to learn-to-code packages like ScratchX, Tynker, and Microsoft MakeCode, players start with familiar tools, templates and tutorials. Minecraft: Education Edition is available free to qualified education institutions with any new Windows 10 device. You can check out our Minecraft: Education Edition sign-up page to learn how you can receive a one-year, single-user subscription for Minecraft: Education Edition for each new Windows 10 device purchased for your K-12 school.

OhBot is an educational robotics system that has been designed to stretch pupils’ computational thinking and understanding of computer science, and explore human/robot interaction through a creative robotic head that students program to speak and interact with their environment.

Another key area that we are supporting is in simulation solutions for robotics, to enable lower-cost access and better design practices in the classroom. With these programs, educators can teach robotic coding without a physical robot.

Daniel Rosenstein, a volunteer Robotics coach at the Elementary, Middle school and High school levels, firmly believes that simulation illustrates the connection between computer science and best practices in engineering design. Simulation makes the design process uniquely personal, because students are encouraged to build digital versions of their physical robot, and to try their programs in the simulator before investing in physical tools. The simulation environment, similar to a video game, creates a digital representation of the robot and its tasks, and allows for very quick learning cycles through design, programming, trial and error.

The Virtual Robotics Toolkit (VRT) is a good example. It’s an advanced simulator designed to enhance the LEGO MINDSTORMS experience. An excellent learning tool for classroom and competitive robotics, the VRT is easy to use and is approved by teachers and students.

Looks set to be another year of great new apps in the Microsoft Store and we are excited to shortly be welcoming Synthesis: An Autodesk Technology to the Store.  This app is built for design simulation and will enable students to work together to design, test and experiment with robotics, without having to touch a piece of physical hardware.

We look forward to connecting with you on this and more soon!
