Introducing the Office app for Windows 10 – Microsoft 365 Blog

Last year, we updated Office.com with a new experience focused on two simple things: helping users get the most out of Office and getting them back into their work quickly. The streamlined site has clearly resonated with customers, and now more than 40 percent of Office 365 web users start their work by visiting Office.com.

Starting today, we’re bringing this experience to Windows 10 in the form of an app, simply called Office. It’s now available to Windows Insiders (Fast) and will roll out to all Windows 10 users soon. The app itself is free and it can be used with any Office 365 subscription, Office 2019, Office 2016, or Office Online—the free web-based version of Office for consumers.

A few key reasons to use the app include:

  • Quickly switch between apps. See all your Office apps in one place and switch between them with a single click.
  • Get back into your work. Jump to your most recently used documents, pinned documents, and documents shared with you—whether they’re on your local machine or stored in OneDrive or SharePoint.
  • Find what you need. With Microsoft Search integrated prominently, you can quickly find the apps, documents, people, and sites you need to get your work done.
  • Tailor it to your organization. Organizations can apply company branding and integrate other line of business applications through single sign-on to customize the experience for their users.

The Office app will replace the My Office app, which currently helps users manage their Office 365 subscriptions. If you already have the My Office app, you will get the new Office app through an automatic update in the coming months. Otherwise, you can download it from the Microsoft Store. Starting this summer, new Windows 10 devices will come with the Office app already installed—making it easier than ever to start using Office on a new PC.

Let us know what you think

We are excited to share this initial release with the Windows Insiders, and we’ll continue to improve the experience based on your feedback. Please let us know what you think via the feedback link under Settings within the app.

Hitachi Pentaho integration aims to subdue unstructured data

Hitachi Content Platform object storage has received a surcharge of AI power from Pentaho data-integration software.

Hitachi Pentaho 8.2 embeds Pentaho’s data analytics and management in Hitachi Content Platform, turning it into a data lake to stage the movement of cleansed data to storage on hybrid clouds.

Customers can connect to Hitachi object storage directly through Pentaho, with flexibility to drag and drop objects between any data platform. That includes the ability to delete, update and write data from within Hitachi object storage.

Arik Pelkey, a senior director of product marketing for Hitachi Pentaho, said data centers can now build “data pipelines” from structured and unstructured data.

“Broadly speaking, we are facilitating easier data management by way of being able to connect with other types of infrastructure,” Pelkey said.

Estimated rates of unstructured data growth vary by analyst firm, but the trajectory is always upward due to an explosion of data from email, IoT sensors, video and text.

Integrating Pentaho in Hitachi object storage separates compute and storage for analyzing data across multiple clouds, said Matt Aslett, a research vice president of data, AI and analytics at 451 Research.

“Many enterprises are leaving the data where it resides and spinning up a separate layer of compute to analyze the data as required, rather than move it all into a monolithic platform” for analysis, Aslett said.

Vehicle information company Carfax started to implement a Hitachi Pentaho stack in stages about two months ago. One objective was to improve governance of its data across operations in Canada, Europe and the U.S., Carfax Director of Data Management Andrew Buffone said.

Carfax lands its Hitachi stack on a private hosted cloud that connects to both Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure at the Pentaho tier. Buffone said the initial use is analysis and preparation of source-side data.

“We took an iterative approach. We’re still in flight on certain components of the Hitachi stack — we don’t have the [hyper-converged infrastructure] component (Hitachi Unified Compute Platform hyper-convergence). We only have about 10% of our data footprint going through the Pentaho now, but our plan is to scale up to about 90% by the June timeframe,” Buffone said.

The Hitachi-Pentaho integration has been several years in the making. Hitachi acquired Pentaho in 2015. The company launched the Hitachi Vantara brand in 2017, which combined Hitachi storage (formerly Hitachi Data Systems), Hitachi Insight IoT technologies and Pentaho.

Pelkey said the Pentaho integration illustrates how Hitachi is working to strengthen ties between analytics and Hitachi Vantara’s overall storage. “There is a strong mandate for more collaboration across all the different product teams at Hitachi. This is just one example of the direction we’re going in.”

Current trends in content management indicate road ahead

Listen to this podcast

CMS trends for 2019 promise to include more AI, and even more AI on top of that. E-commerce and personalization — to effect more inbound revenue — also promise to figure in.

Bigger, badder AI tools, tighter e-commerce integration and content personalization constituted the biggest trends in content management this year — at least if you go by what vendors, their customers and analysts told SearchContentManagement reporters on the conference circuit this year.

Trends in content management from ECM vendors, such as Box and OpenText, included pushing AI deeper into processes like search and digital asset management. Yet, industry leaders made it clear that creating a branded AI black box, such as OpenText’s Magellan, wasn’t enough. They developed APIs to connect an enterprise content management data lake to other AI services, such as Google’s AI or IBM’s Watson, to make their longstanding ECM platforms more adaptable and to keep up with startup cloud competitors.

On the web content management side, Acquia and its competitors increased capabilities for content personalization — the locating, rendering and serving of content relevant to individual employees or customers, taking into account what device they’re using. The industry worked to perfect this the last several years. But 2018 showed a shift toward connecting personalization to e-commerce platforms in order to cash in on sales generated by customized offer inbound marketing.

Content platform vendors made several big moves, such as Adobe purchasing e-commerce platform Magento and Acquia partnering with Elastic Path and BigCommerce to create tighter integrations. Those vendor machinations should result in rainmaking e-commerce deployments in 2019 and 2020 as content managers and their marketing colleagues figure out creative ways to use these new toys.

Listen to this episode of the Pipeline podcast to hear SearchContentManagement reporters Jesse Scardina and Don Fluckinger discuss these stories and a lot more — such as the next big AI content management use cases — as they recap 2018 trends in content management in an effort to predict what 2019 will bring.
