For an immersive entertainment experience or focused productivity, pair any of the new IdeaPad or IdeaCentre PCs with the new Yoga ANC Headphones, which include hybrid ANC (active noise cancellation) and ENC (environmental noise cancellation) mics with voice assist and Dolby-tuned drivers that can intelligently filter out background noise during calls.

The evolution of workspaces includes connected devices that provide features and benefits for laptops, which are central to modern users’ digital wardrobe. With this in mind, Lenovo also introduced the latest additions to the ThinkPad portfolio: the T490s, T490, T590, X390 and X390 Yoga. (They join more than 140 million ThinkPads that have been sold to date.)

Thinkpad T490s with Dolby optional display

Whether it is working on business-critical workflows or interacting on social media, users expect access wherever and whenever they want. All ThinkPad models include high-performance Wi-Fi and optional LTE-A global WWAN capability. The ThinkPad T490 takes roaming connectivity to the next level with CAT16 LTE-A support with the 4×4 UltraConnect antenna configuration for up to Gigabit speeds and maximum signal strength.
The ThinkPad T490s, X390 and X390 Yoga also feature new Wi-Fi 6 Gig+ technology with Bluetooth 5.1 for premium Gigabit wireless connectivity.
For 2019, Lenovo has embraced Intelligent Connectivity principles through a foundational engineering philosophy.
With industry-leading security with ThinkShield, users can confidently work with confidential information. The online world is full of hazards and threats, such as data breaches and stolen identities. Users want their personal information, identity and data to be secure out of the box. In any typical day, a user will most certainly login to their laptop, likely participate in a video conference and perhaps review confidential information.

Lenovo fingerprint reader

The Match-on-Chip fingerprint reader enhances the privacy of fingerprint information by ensuring the biometric image never leaves the chip, thus delivering a more secure identification for login and online transactions.

ThinkShutter

ThinkShutter [6], a physical camera cover, available on both RGB and IR webcams, offers a way to protect users from malicious webcam hackers. ThinkPad PrivacyGuard [7] activates screen privacy at the touch of a button. PrivacyAlert can even warn you if someone is snooping over your shoulder.
Users will also notice significant improvements to the ThinkPad BIOS, such as a new modern Graphical User Interface making the BIOS much easier to navigate. Lenovo has also developed a range of new UEFI-based BIOS security and manageability enhancements, providing users and IT administrators with higher levels of security and management capabilities.
One of those is a self-healing feature that is able to revert to a known good backup copy in the event of BIOS corruption or a malicious attack. This is designed to provide customers with a more resilient BIOS and to prevent hackers from infiltrating the lowest level firmware code.
To further enhance the mobile work experience, Lenovo has high-definition displays, such as a new low-power 400 nit FHD display using Low Temperature Polycrystalline Silicon technology to boost brightness with improved battery life. And for the first time in ThinkPad T and X series, Lenovo introduces dual far-field microphones that significantly enhance VOIP conferencing performance, especially for multiple participants and in noisy environments, and Dolby Audio Premium greatly improves sound.
These updated ThinkPad T and X series laptops also include HDR displays with Dolby Vision support available on all T series and the latest 8th Generation Intel Core processors.
Also debuting at MWC: the Lenovo 14w with Windows 10 and Lenovo 14e Chromebook laptops, which are aimed at increasing firstline worker productivity; an all-new ThinkVision M14 mobile display; and X1 ANC Headphones to maximize the flexibility of remote teamwork.
Firstline workers are key contributors within large enterprise segments, such as retail, hospitality, travel and manufacturing. By providing firstline workers with PC devices, such as the Lenovo 14w and 14e Chromebook, companies can improve their collaboration and contribution. Designed with this specific segment of the workforce in mind, the Lenovo 14w and 14e Chromebook, powered by AMD, are built with features to handle the wear and tear of a day on the shop or factory floor.
In the Lenovo 14w with Windows 10, users will find AMD A6-9220c performance in a thin and light package: 17.7mm and 3.39 pounds, with an aluminum top cover. There’s also a 14-inch FHD with IPS touch display; a spill-proof and backlit keyboard; and a 57 Whr battery built to last a full day. It will be available starting in March, with an expected starting price of $299 [8].
The new ThinkVision M14 monitor offers a simple mobile display solution for increased screen real-estate while on the move so users can share content with colleagues and customers. Both USB-C ports can be used as a pass-through when connected to AC power. They can also charge your laptop or simply connect as a second screen. It will be available starting in May, with an expected price of $249 [8].
The X1 ANC Headphone, professionally tuned by Dolby for Lenovo systems, offers enhanced audio capability and noise-cancelling features such as active noise cancellation (ANC) and electronic noise cancelling (ENC), similar to technology used in aviation headsets. The headphones can be used wireless through Bluetooth 5.0, or connected and charged by USB-C. The collapsible design means easy storage and transport. It will be available starting in June, with an expected price of $149 [8].

Five powerful productivity features in Outlook

By some estimates more than half the planet’s population is using email today. And although people everywhere are spending more time with technology, most of us crave a healthier relationship with our inbox.

We also live in a world where there is so much information that it has become hard to focus on what matters. We often find ourselves jumping around from one thing to another. Yet research has shown that multitasking can damage productivity, as the simple act of switching between tasks consumes valuable time and drains attention.

This reality has become central to the way we design Outlook. The nature of work is changing, and we can help make it a change for the better. We’re striving to design features that can quickly turn information into insight and action, to help people focus on what they’re doing, on whatever platform and device they choose. Every time we can shave a few seconds off a common task, it enables connecting, communicating, and organizing—minimizing scrolling, searching, and pondering.

So, what are some ways to be more productive and focused with Outlook? Well, there are many, but recently I asked my team about their favorites. Here are five features to consider:

1.     @ mentions across Outlook, Word, and PowerPoint. Sending a high-priority mail is still a great way to get recipients’ attention. But if you want to get a particular person’s attention quickly, you can simply @ mention them in a document or email. Doing so in Outlook will automatically add that person to the TO: line and display the @ symbol to the recipient. As the recipient scans their inbox, they’ll know the message contains something important and actionable.

2.     Streamlined collaboration—especially on the go. Working with others to hone Word documents or PowerPoint decks via mail has historically been entirely manual. You know the drill: Download the attachment from the message. Open it. Make changes and add comments. Save. Attach to a new mail. Send. That’s a lot of steps—and potential miscues as different versions start circulating. To streamline this, we’ve made it possible to open, read, and even make edits to documents right from the Outlook on the web. This is not only great for those on the go, but also provides the advantage of being able to see the document alongside the email, so comments and instructions can be quickly scanned right next to the document itself.

3.     Capture visual content with Office Lens. Developed as part of Microsoft OneNote, Office Lens is a way of capturing images, notes, and even contacts using the camera on a phone, tablet, or PC. Snap a picture of a whiteboard, for example, and Office Lens crops it, straightens it out, and saves it to your OneNote notebook. Integration with Outlook also means Office Lens can help you keep track of contacts. When you snap a picture of a business card in the Office Lens business-card mode, OneNote automatically recognizes the information and makes it searchable. Upon opening the file, the contact information can be saved to either Outlook or your phone’s contacts.

4.     Building relationships with LinkedIn. Integration with LinkedIn has been especially powerful. For one, LinkedIn brings info to People Cards in Office 365, allowing you to see people’s contact and profile information by hovering over their name. You can also add LinkedIn insights about people you’ll be meeting directly to your Outlook calendar. Outlook also provides the ability to collaborate and coauthor content in Word, PowerPoint, or Excel with experts in your LinkedIn network, without needing to have their email addresses stored in your Outlook contacts.

5.     Make plans and coordinate schedules. Asking coworkers to manually share their availability for a meeting can be time-consuming, so for years Outlook has made it easy to see commonly open windows of availability for meeting invitees. We’ve streamlined the experience further with Outlook mobile, where you can share your availability with colleagues as well as anyone outside your organization and get a meeting created from your  phone, in just a couple taps.

All these tips remove friction from everyday tasks to connect users with their desired outcomes more quickly. By enabling this, we also hope to remove some day-to-day stress and make Outlook a place to manage your digital life. We’ve all heard terms like “inbox overload.” We’ve all searched our desks and pockets for an important phone number. Outlook is designed to reduce those moments of anxiety and help your day go more smoothly.

Ultimately, by equipping Outlook to perform some of these common tasks behind the scenes, we want to help people focus on what matters to them, so they can stay connected, organized, and productive.

Google buys Alooma to bolster its cloud data migration chops

Google’s acquisition of Israeli startup Alooma strengthens the cloud vendor’s ability to pull diverse sets of information into its data warehouse services, but also pulls another multi-cloud-capable option off the table for customers.

Alooma’s data pipeline service pools information from a wide variety of sources, from databases like SQL Server, Amazon Aurora, Google Cloud Spanner and Oracle, to enterprise applications such as Salesforce, Zendesk and Zuora. It then merges those data sets into data warehouse targets such as Google BigQuery, AWS Redshift and Snowflake for analysis. Support is in the works for Azure SQL Data Warehouse, MySQL and PostgreSQL, according to Alooma’s website.

Given its value, some of those prebuilt integrations will likely survive the transition to Google Cloud’s ownership. Google will support Alooma customers’ use of the pipeline tool on other clouds, but plans to accept only new customers who want to migrate data to Google Cloud Platform (GCP), according to a Google spokesperson.

Indeed, Google’s official blog post on the deal refers only to how Alooma can drive workloads to the likes of its Cloud Spanner and Bigtable services — with no mention of competitors’ cloud services. That’s somewhat of a surprise, said Deepak Mohan, an analyst at IDC.

Deepak Mohan, IDCDeepak Mohan

“I’d have thought they’d keep the funnel open as wide as possible,” Mohan said.

These acquisitions have become commonplace as the top cloud providers continue to fill out their capabilities. In January, AWS bought CloudEndure, a provider of workload migration, disaster recovery and backup services. GCP had offered CloudEndure’s tools free of charge to its customers.

Last year, GCP bought Velostrata, another Israeli startup that specializes in cloud migration. But Velostrata’s tools move VM-based databases and applications wholesale to the cloud, whereas Alooma’s focus is to extract information from such target sources and into the cloud for analysis. GCP now has both arrows in its quiver.

Alooma’s focus on ETL for data warehousing and analysis also aligns with where Google has seen traction in the enterprise, Mohan added.

We expect to see a lot of renewed interest in migration technology and migration service providers.
Dave Bartoletti analyst, Forrester Research

“All of this is in the context of legacy inertia,” he said. “There are things cloud companies need to do to help customers make the transition.”

Google has vast engineering resources but obviously decided that speed was of the essence in terms of its Alooma acquisition.

“When you think of this market and how quickly cloud providers are fighting for market and mindshare among buyers, a year is too long to wait,” Mohan said.

Terms of the Alooma purchase, which is subject to closing conditions, were not disclosed. The company had received $15 million in venture capital, according to Crunchbase, which suggests a possibly modest price tag. Israeli business publication Globes placed the cost at $100 to $150 million, although it cited only “market sources.”

More Google cloud deals coming?

While not a blockbuster in terms of value, the Alooma purchase reinforces widespread speculation that Google Cloud will ramp up acquisitions under the leadership of recently appointed CEO Thomas Kurian, a former top Oracle executive.

Dave Bartoletti, ForresterDave Bartoletti

The Alooma purchase also symbolizes a bigger trend in the cloud market, said Dave Bartoletti, an analyst at Forrester Research. This year we’ll see a big uptick in enterprise cloud adoption as companies focus on modernizing their existing portfolios of core applications, he said.

The first step in every enterprise app modernization effort is to decide what — if anything — to move to public cloud and what should remain in a corporate data center. “We expect to see a lot of renewed interest in migration technology and migration service providers,” Bartoletti said.

With Alooma and Velostrata, Google has built out faster and easier ways for enterprises to move both data and virtualized apps to Google Cloud to kick start those important traditional app modernization efforts, he said.

New AI, mixed reality business solutions lead the way for Microsoft Dynamics 365 – Microsoft Dynamics 365

Today at Microsoft Business Forward in Paris, France we connected with hundreds of global business leaders to share our vision for Microsoft Business Applications. In addition, I had the privilege to unveil new Dynamics 365 AI and mixed reality applications, and new solutions to help businesses unlock deeper insights from data across their organizations.

The new capabilities we introduce biannually in our October and April releases advance our commitment to remove barriers to innovation and operational excellence; a vision reinforced by amazing stories of companies evolving their business as usual. ExxonMobil is a great example. This week, we announced that the world’s largest publicly traded international oil and gas company has deployed Dynamics 365 to help improve operations in one of the world’s most important oil-producing regions.

ExxonMobil joins a growing roster of organizations deploying Microsoft Business Applications to help foster innovation by unlocking siloed data and enabling a holistic, 360-degree view of the business, customers and employees. Built on a unified data platform, businesses can apply intelligence across workloads, giving people the ability to reason over data wherever it resides, predict trends, and drive action. And with adaptable business applications, business professionals can build and customize solutions, allowing people and processes to stay ahead of trends and market forces.

Moving business forward with AI, mixed reality, and data insight solutions

Today’s announcements accelerate our vision and the impact we can deliver to customers, building on Dynamics 365 AI and mixed reality solutions announced in September 2018. The following new solutions are reflected in the updated April 2019 release notes available starting today.

Dynamics 365 + AI

This spring, we are continuing to invest in new and expanded data and AI services for unprecedented business intelligence, security, and insight-driven innovation and customer experiences.

Dynamics 365 Customer Insights provide anyone—from non-technical business users to analysts and data scientists—with a deeper understanding of customers, enabling intelligent insights and action that can help you personalize experiences, retain customers, and build loyalty. Tivoli, the Denmark-based operator of the second-oldest operating amusement park in the world, aims to be one of the first organizations to leverage Dynamics 365 Customer Insights. They are working to utilize artificial intelligence and the application to unify guest data siloed across databases, generate actionable insights, engage guests intelligently, and deliver personalized experiences, whether in marketing messages, loyalty offers, or during face-to-face interactions at the park. Dynamics 365 Customer Insights is now available for preview and coming to general availability in April. Visit the Dynamics 365 Customer Insights web page to learn more.

Dynamics 365 Virtual Agent for Customer Service empowers business users to easily create and manage AI-powered virtual agents that resolve routine problems and requests. With an initial focus on customer service, future capabilities will extend virtual agent solutions across a range of customer experience scenarios to automate problem solving. This new cloud service, launching in public preview in April, empowers those closest to the customer to create, deploy, and manage virtual agents that automate solutions to problems without the need for data science or coding expertise. This will help reduce the time and costs to deliver exceptional customer experiences.

Dynamics 365 Fraud Protection is a new cloud-based anti-fraud solution for e-commerce merchants designed to drive down fraud loss, increase bank acceptance rates to yield higher revenue, and improve the online shopping experience of its customers. Enterprises will benefit from the same technology deployed within Microsoft to dramatically reduce fraud loss rates and false positive rates while increasing bank acceptance rates, an achievement recognized by The Institute for Operations Research and Management Science (INFORMS) as a finalist for the 2019 Franz Edelman Award for achievements in advanced analytics, operations research, and management science. A public preview will be made available in April 2019.

Dynamics 365 + Mixed Reality

The adoption of mixed reality solutions for Microsoft Business Applications in 2018 has been inspiring, with real-world success in sectors ranging from manufacturing, automotive, and energy, particularly with a field service workforce. Toyota’s North America Production Engineering team has been using Dynamics 365 Layout and Dynamics 365 Remote Assist on Microsoft HoloLens in their North America manufacturing centers. Dynamics 365 Layout can improve business processes in valuable ways, such as the layout of digital twins of equipment on the manufacturing floor for safety and process verification, and creating innovative AR training practices through the use of holographic equipment instead of physical equipment in space. Dynamics 365 Remote Assist is in the early phases of being used to improve safety and reduce costs through the use of remote experts for equipment verification and incident response.

Today we’re announcing that we’re extending our Dynamics 365 mixed reality applications to mobile devices, so businesses can leverage mixed reality technology on devices they already have. Customers continue to tell us that HoloLens is the best mixed reality device for business, and that it’s a breakthrough for their many areas that require heads up, hands free work. But we also know that many employees carry AR-capable phones and tablets everywhere they go. These two new solutions will further enable employees to adopt mixed reality at work, no matter what device they use.

Dynamics 365 Product Visualize (coming to iOS in preview) empowers sellers to showcase and customize products in their actual environment, helping create a shared understanding between buyer and seller to accelerate complex sales processes. In industries like manufacturing, healthcare, and automotive where products are often complex, and highly configurable or simply too cumbersome to carry around, the need for product visualization is key. It builds a buyer’s confidence early in the sales process so costly change orders are reduced, and customer satisfaction is higher. Using Product Visualize, sellers can show products to customers directly within their Dynamics 365 for Sales workflow and spatial and configuration notes are all saved directly within the associated sales opportunity. Since sales commonly requires more than just one individual, sellers can leverage session content directly in Microsoft Teams to improve internal collaboration to deliver customer-oriented solutions that are critical to accelerating the sales process.

Dynamics 365 Remote Assist for mobile devices (coming to Android in preview) extends the capabilities of Dynamics 365 Remote Assist to Android mobile devices and allows employees to work together from anywhere, empowering technicians to solve problems faster the first time. With Remote Assist, technicians can use either Microsoft HoloLens or an Android mobile device to collaborate with remote experts and troubleshoot issues in context. This latest release of Remote Assist for mobile devices and HoloLens will also include mobile annotations, group calling, deeper integration with Dynamics 365 for Field Service, and improved accessibility features for the HoloLens app.

Empowering people with data insights

One of the reasons Microsoft Business Applications are so powerful is the ability to integrate intelligent tools and generate insights from data sourced from every corner of the organization, including customer transactions, marketing engagement, lead generation activities, and financial and operational data. We continually add new capabilities to bring data insights to life, such as the new Microsoft Forms Pro, that will be available in public preview this spring. This enterprise survey tool makes it easy for organizations to collect feedback across customer touchpoints using surveys, quizzes, and polls, correlate the feedback with business transactions, and derive actionable insights from the combined data. Additional details are available via the Microsoft Forms Pro preview.

The momentum continues with enhancements to the Microsoft Power Platform, combining Power BI, PowerApps, Microsoft Flow, and Common Data Service into an unmatched palette of tools to extend, customize, and integrate Dynamics 365 and Office 365 into your environment. These three applications form a framework that allows users to analyze data to gain insights, act on insights to drive intelligent business processes from the apps they build, and automate tasks to lower costs while reducing errors.

Today at Microsoft Business Forward, we shared how Virgin Atlantic is leveraging the Microsoft Power Platform to speed up application development and empower non-developers to create applications and automate workflows. From customer service and gate agents to maintenance crews and operations, teams across the company can leverage PowerApps and an extensible platform to get insights from data, and share those insights across the highly mobile workforce, enabling secure use of data by employees at airports, on planes, and in offices around the world—all with different roles and information requirements.

Teams have consolidated customer data into a single source of truth, providing service agents with a 360-degree view of customer preferences, enabling a travel experience as seamless and enjoyable as possible. On the operational side, the engineering compliance team is using PowerApps to replace paper-based safety and compliance audits. See today’s post to the PowerApps blog for a detailed look at how Virgin Atlantic is reimaging the passenger experience one PowerApp at a time.

Explore the Microsoft Business Applications April 2019 release

We look forward to sharing more updates and customer stories in the weeks and months ahead, including at the Virtual Launch event on April 2nd. In the meantime, view the April 2019 release notes for details about all features releasing from April 2019 through September 2019 for Dynamics 365 and Power Platform.

Google Cloud Services Platform presses hybrid cloud agenda

Google’s entry into hybrid cloud computing is closer to general availability, but questions remain about the service’s ultimate reception among enterprise customers.

Google Cloud Services Platform, which debuted last July and is now in beta, is geared for application modernization, whether a customer wants to run refactored workloads in the public cloud or their own data centers, according to the company. Its foundation is Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE), the managed service for secure orchestration of Kubernetes containers.

A key component, Google GKE On-Prem, applies GKE to private data center environments. Other elements include a managed version of Istio, the open source service mesh, along with Stackdriver Service Monitoring and Apigee API Management.

The beta launch of Cloud Services Platform also adds a feature called Config Management, a governance layer that enables customers to create container cluster policies for role-based access, resource parameters and namespaces. The system can detect when changes have been made that clash with established policies and alert administrators automatically.

One key difference from the likes of Azure Stack, AWS Outposts and Oracle Cloud at Customer is that Google Cloud Services Platform is a software stack only, not a system that integrates software with specialized hardware. Google’s intent is that customers use their existing hardware when possible, although it must be underpinned by VMware. This approach also will help Google avoid the need to build and support its own appliances, or develop hardware partnerships and certifications.

Maribel Lopez, Lopez ResearchMaribel Lopez

Down the road this could change, however. Google Cloud CTO Brian Stevens previously told TechTarget that ultimately the company would look at a model to develop multiple infrastructure stacks for different OEM partners.

This isn’t Google Cloud’s only hybrid play, either. It has a partnership with Nutanix to deliver a single control plane for customers to manage their hyper-converged, on-premises Nutanix environments and extend them to Google Cloud services.

Google has worked with early customers since the initial launch of Cloud Services Platform, said Chen Goldberg, head of engineering for Container Engine and Kubernetes, but she declined to say when Cloud Services Platform will become generally available. Pricing will be based on a similar cost model as GKE, she said.

Google's Cloud Services Platform

Google rides the container wave to win enterprise cloud converts

Google Cloud Services Platform reflects enterprise IT’s overall embrace of containers, both to refactor older applications — not just lift and shift them — and support new kinds of portable workloads, such as IoT to gaming applications, said Larry Carvalho, an analyst at IDC. Appealing to this range of scenarios will help Google secure more enterprise workloads, which it needs as it trails well behind AWS and Microsoft Azure in market share.

Even though Google is seen as a top player for AI and machine learning in the cloud, from a buying standpoint, a small percentage of the market cares about those capabilities today, said Maribel Lopez, principal analyst of Lopez Research in San Francisco. Application modernization is hot on the minds of enterprise IT, though, and Google Cloud Services Platform can tap into that interest.

“Right now [Google needs] something that’s a little more immediate, a little more visceral,” she said. “If Google can convince customers they are the PaaS provider to do that, it can be strategic for them.”

Google’s Cloud Services Platform also positions Google as an ideal partner for systems integrators, such as Accenture, TCS and Cognizant.

    Any trades?
I have the mobo, cpu and ram in the signature which I would like to swap for this if you are interested.

So this: i5 4690k // Asus Z97 Gamer Pro Mobo // Corsair Vengence 16 GB
