Microsoft Azure Security Center—the central hub for monitoring and protecting against related incidents within Azure—has released new capabilities. The following features—announced at Hannover Messe 2019—are now generally available for the Azure Security Center:

  • Advanced Threat Protection for Azure Storage—Layer of protection that helps customers detect and respond to potential threats on their storage account as they occur—without having to be an expert in security.
  • Regulatory compliance dashboard—Helps Security Center customers streamline their compliance process by providing insight into their compliance posture for a set of supported standards and regulations.
  • Support for Virtual Machine Scale Sets (VMSS)—Easily monitor the security posture of your VMSS with security recommendations.
  • Dedicated Hardware Security Module (HSM) service, now available in U.K., Canada, and Australia—Provides cryptographic key storage in Azure and meets the most stringent customer security and compliance requirements.
  • Azure disk encryption support for VMSS—Now Azure disk encryption can be enabled for Windows and Linux VMSS in Azure public regions—enabling customers to help protect and safeguard the VMSS data at rest using industry standard encryption technology.

CEO switch continues BMC’s multi-cloud management push

Executive changes at BMC put a familiar face back in charge, in an ongoing reinvention to make BMC a multi-cloud management vendor to help enterprise customers adopt modern computing architectures.

Former BMC chairman and CEO Bob Beauchamp has returned as interim president and CEO effective immediately, as Peter Leav, who served as CEO since 2016, has left to take “a planned career break,” the company said.

Beauchamp, who also will sit on BMC’s board, started as a salesman at BMC in 1988, rose to the role of CEO in 2001, and remained in that role as BMC went private in 2013 in a $6.9 billion deal. Leav took the helm in 2016 to see the company through its next stage of growth, the company said at the time. That included KKR’s purchase of BMC in 2018 for a reported $8.5 billion.

BMC once was known as one of the “Big Four” companies in IT service management (ITSM) software alongside Hewlett Packard Enterprise, CA Technologies and IBM. Like its rivals, the company has shied away from the ITSM identification label in recent years and positioned itself as a specialist in multi-cloud management. Growth prospects were bleak at the time of BMC’s initial move to go private; it posted $2.2 billion in revenue during its fiscal 2013, up from $2.17 billion the fiscal year prior.

In recent years, those Big Four have undergone significant changes and revamped their strategies to remain relevant in a market where cloud computing — not mainframes and traditional data center architectures — is in vogue, and cloud infrastructure vendors offer an ever-greater range of management and governance tools. Besides BMC’s two private ownerships, HPE sold off many of its software assets to Micro Focus for $8.5 billion in 2017, while Broadcom bought CA Technologies last year for $18.9 billion.

BMC still has a substantial menu of traditional ITSM products, embodied by the Remedy Service Management Suite at the large enterprise level. It also offers a version called Remedyforce for the midmarket and Track-It for small companies.

BMC sees challenges in ITSM from the likes of ServiceNow, which offers an array of cloud-based applications and has experienced rapid growth in value. BMC has also modernized its older software, such as the Control-M data management tool, to address new trends in DevOps practices.

BMC’s multi-cloud products, meanwhile, cater to areas such as workload migration, performance monitoring, cost management, security and workload automation.

CEO change comes at inflection point for BMC, customers

Today, BMC is in a good position to grow both organically and through mergers and acquisitions under Beauchamp’s leadership, according to a KKR statement, although it provided no examples. However, a BMC executive gave some clues into the company’s acquisition plans in a Bloomberg interview last year, describing an appetite for potential deals worth up to “tens of millions [of dollars].”

Still, Beauchamp is officially an interim leader, and his influence may be limited if BMC’s longer-term goal is to attract a CEO with fresh ideas for both the business and for customer service.

Hybrid computing environments are the norm in the modern enterprise. Recent survey data from Enterprise Strategy Group (ESG) in Milford, Mass., shows that 58% of respondents use IaaS — and within that, half run production applications on such services, ESG analyst Bob Laliberte said. Moreover, 76% said they use more than one public cloud.

“BMC clearly has a strong background on the on-prem side, but they will need to expand to cover major cloud vendors to take advantage of the opportunity to deliver overall management,” Laliberte said. BMC also must focus on customers’ need for edge computing management, he added.

There is indeed a role for BMC to play in today’s market, to help enterprises navigate challenges around infrastructure management, said Maribel Lopez, principal of Lopez Research in San Francisco. “Peoples’ environments have become very unwieldy,” Lopez said.

Some enterprises view BMC, like some of its traditional competitors, as a stodgy company that wants to reinvent itself, but actually, that offers a counterintuitive strength, she added.

“Stodgy companies understand some of these problems better than the new ones, because they helped create them,” she said. “They have people that can be tapped to figure out legacy stuff versus born-on-the-cloud stuff.”

Improving the Windows 10 update experience with control, quality and transparency | Windows Experience Blog

While regular updates are critical to keeping modern devices secure and running smoothly in a diverse and dynamic ecosystem, we have heard clear feedback that the Windows update process itself can be disruptive, particularly that Windows users would like more control over when updates happen. Today we are excited to announce significant changes in the Windows update process, changes designed to improve the experience, put the user in more control, and improve the quality of Windows updates.
In previous Windows 10 feature update rollouts, the update installation was automatically initiated on a device once our data gave us confidence that device would have a great update experience.  Beginning with the Windows 10 May 2019 Update, users will be more in control of initiating the feature OS update.  We will provide notification that an update is available and recommended based on our data, but it will be largely up to the user to initiate when the update occurs.  When Windows 10 devices are at, or will soon reach, end of service, Windows update will continue to automatically initiate a feature update; keeping machines supported and receiving monthly updates is critical to device security and ecosystem health.  We are adding new features that will empower users with control and transparency around when updates are installed. In fact, all customers will now have the ability to explicitly choose if they want to update their device when they “check for updates” or to pause updates for up to 35 days.
We are taking further steps to be confident in the quality of the May 2019 Update. We will increase the amount of time that the May 2019 Update spends in the Release Preview phase, and we will work closely with ecosystem partners during this phase to proactively obtain more early feedback about this release. This will give us additional signals to detect issues before broader deployment. We are also continuing to make significant new investments in machine learning (ML) technology to both detect high-impact issues efficiently at scale and further evolve how we intelligently select devices that will have a smooth update experience.
I’m pleased to announce that the Windows 10 May 2019 Update will start to be available next week in the Release Preview Ring for those in the Windows Insider Program. We will begin broader availability in late May for commercial customers, users who choose the new May 2019 Update for their Windows 10 PC via “check for updates,” and customers whose devices are nearing the end of support on a given release.
I’d now like to share the details of our new update controls and the enhancements to our approach to transparency and quality coming with the May 2019 Update.
New features that put customers more in control of updates
With the release of the Windows 10 May 2019 Update, we are introducing new features that provide additional clarity and control over the update experience, both for feature updates and optional monthly non-security updates. New, straightforward controls were designed to help prevent updates from occurring unexpectedly and to make it very clear which type of update is selected. At the heart of this change is a new “Download and install now” option in Windows Update settings.

Download and install now option provides users a separate control to initiate the installation of a feature update on eligible devices with no known key blocking compatibility issues. Users can still “Check for updates” to get monthly quality and security updates. Windows will automatically initiate a new feature update if the version of Windows 10 is nearing end of support. We may notify you when a feature update is available and ready for your machine. All Windows 10 devices with a supported version will continue to automatically receive the monthly updates. This new “download and install” option will also be available for our most popular versions of Windows 10, versions 1803 and 1809, by late May.

Additional improvements to put users more in control of updates that are being introduced with the May 2019 Update include:

Extended ability to pause updates for both feature and monthly updates. This extension ability is for all editions of Windows 10, including Home. Based on user feedback we know that any update can come at an inconvenient time, such as when a PC is needed for a big presentation. So, we’re making it possible for all users to pause both feature and monthly updates for up to 35 days (seven days at a time, up to five times). Once the 35-day pause period is reached, users will need to update their device before pausing again.
Intelligent active hours to avoid disruptive update restarts. The active hours feature, introduced in the Windows 10 Anniversary Update, relies on a manually configured time range to avoid automatically installing updates and rebooting. Many users leave the active hours setting at its 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. default. To further enhance active hours, users will now have the option to let Windows Update intelligently adjust active hours based on their device-specific usage patterns.
Improved update orchestration to improve system responsiveness. This feature will improve system performance by intelligently coordinating Windows updates and Microsoft Store updates, so they occur when users are away from their devices to minimize disruptions.

Expanded focus on quality
Quality is extremely important to us. While we are always making investments in how we approach and improve quality, I’d like to highlight several specific improvements we are making with the May 2019 Update.
Expanding Release Preview
The final May 2019 Update build will spend increased time in the Release Preview Ring of the Windows Insider Program, allowing us to gather more feedback and insights on compatibility and performance at scale before making the update more broadly available. During this period, we are significantly expanding interaction with our ecosystem partners, including original equipment makers (OEMs) and independent software vendors (ISVs), which should help improve initial quality across a variety of devices, hardware and software configurations.
OEMs will begin manufacturing new PCs and devices with this same build, and both OEMs and ISVs will begin deployment of the May 2019 Update internally with their employees. Additionally, Microsoft will aggressively internally deploy the May 2019 Update during the Release Preview period and encourage employees to do the same on their personal devices. By carefully studying data from this expanded population and for this additional time, we will gain increased confidence in Windows quality before offering it to a broader audience later in May.
Early detection of low-volume, high-severity issues
We’re fortunate to have many millions of customers sending us feedback. Our desire to find the most impactful issues quickly required us to think differently about how we apply natural language processing (NLP) and machine learning (ML) to identify high-severity issues faster, even when few people report them. We are building the capability to detect all types of low-volume, high-severity issues, and have specifically advanced our capability in the area of data loss. This work includes streamlining and automating the clustering, classification and routing of the ~20,000 pieces of customer feedback we receive daily and prioritizing the top issues for investigation by engineers, improving our high-severity issue detection capability to hours versus days, as shown below:

Next generation of ML-based intelligent rollout
We are also evolving our intelligent rollout ML model to better differentiate devices that will have a good update experience. We have added new label criteria so we can train the model on a broader set of issues, such as display or audio issues after update. In addition, we have implemented an ensemble approach that enables the model to predict the individual label criteria (e.g., rollback, operating system crash, application issues, etc.) related to the update experience as well as the full collection of criteria to improve our ability to accurately predict and troubleshoot issues.
New public dashboard for increased issue transparency
One of our core principles is transparency, and we are continuing to invest in clear and regular communications with our customers on status and when there are issues. We will be launching a new Windows release health dashboard later this month that will empower users with near real-time information on the current rollout status and known issues (open and resolved) across both feature and monthly updates. This will build on the Windows 10 Update History page that we currently use. Details for each Windows 10 version will be represented on one page that can easily be searched by keyword, including important announcements, new blog posts, service and support updates and other news. Users will be able to share the content via Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook and email. (The dashboard will also feature Dark mode, the same popular feature users love, that was recently introduced in Windows 10.)

Windows 10 May 2019 Update rollout approach
The May 2019 Update will start to be available next week in Release Preview. We will rollout the production-quality Release Preview in phases for early adopters through the Windows Insider Program. Users already taking part in the Release Preview will receive monthly updates via normal channels.
In late May, we will begin availability for those users on a currently supported version of Windows 10 who seek to update via “Download and install now” (limited to devices with no known compatibility issues). We will also begin the phased rollout using our ML model to intelligently target those devices running Windows 10, version 1803 or prior versions that our data and feedback predict will have the best update experience. We will proactively monitor all available feedback and update experience data, making the appropriate product updates when we detect issues, and adjusting the rate of rollout as needed to ensure all devices have the best possible update experience.
Our commercial customers can begin their targeted deployments in late May, which will mark the beginning of the 18-month servicing period for Windows 10, version 1903 in the Semi-Annual Channel. We recommend IT administrators start validating the apps, devices and infrastructure used by their organizations at that time to ensure that they work well with this release before broadly deploying. The May 2019 Update will be available in late May through Windows Server Update Services (WSUS), Windows Update for Business, the Volume Licensing Service Center for phased deployment using System Center Configuration Manager or other systems management software.
Providing update control, quality and transparency
We believe the steps we’ve taken provide Windows customers more choice and control on updates while continuing to enhance our focus on quality. With a more robust and longer Release Preview and further investments in machine learning for both high-severity issue detection and our next generation of intelligent rollout, our goal is to provide the best, transparent Windows update experience. We look forward to sharing more about the rollout of the May 2019 Update and new quality-focused innovations in future posts and on our new Windows release health dashboard.

3 Important Things You Should Know About Storage Spaces Direct

In the earlier parts of this series, we got an overview of Storage Spaces Direct (S2D) and the technologies behind it. In today’s segment, we’re going to speak about Converged and Hyperconverged Clustering, the beginnings of S2D, and licensing. Let’s get going!

Where Did S2D Come From?

S2D is a good example of Microsoft’s Cloud First Strategy in development. When Microsoft was starting with Azure Infrastructure as a Service, there was no permanent storage for virtual machines. Persistent storage for Azure Virtual Machines was introduced later in 2013/14. Platform as a Service (PaaS) and Software as a Service (SaaS) offerings replicated their storage via application clustering but not via storage replication.

To stay current with competitors, Microsoft needed to find a solution that could work with cheap hardware and without expensive Storage Area Network (SAN) technology. The solution was to integrate the storage into the same server farms running the VMs. At the beginning of S2D, Microsoft used shared JBODs via Storage Spaces in Window Server 2012/R2. In later developments, Microsoft went away from shared JBODs and only used local storage disks. Since then, all stored information is replicated within a storage pool running on different servers within a region inside of Azure.

To go a bit further, with the Open Compute Project Olympus, Microsoft introduced the new generation of Cloud Servers. You can find some more information in the following announcement: It’s also worth noting that Microsoft is heavily investing in storage disks and SSDs. With the Open Compute Project Denali, Microsoft has introduced their first self invented SSDs, which will be used in the Microsoft Cloud in the future.

When Microsoft was starting with Azure (and then again with S2D in Azure), they weren’t working with the Open Compute Project. They started with the most common customer hardware supplied by vendors like Dell, HP, and Lenovo. For example the Dell PowerEdge R720XD and PowerVault MD3060e or even the PowerEdge-C Series. They were customer-built for Microsoft and other Cloud Providers. In order to be more efficient in storage, Microsoft today does not use any SAN technology. Microsoft uses pure converged infrastructure, software-defined storage and network.

Within this next part, we will start to speak about the differences between converged and hyper-converged infrastructures. You will get some pros and cons from both and some usage scenarios. Let’s take a look!

Converged vs. Hyper-Converged Infrastructure

When you think about converged or hyper-converged infrastructure you basically can think about a box where you drop in your classic infrastructure components like SAN, Compute, Hypervisor, and Network.

When looking at S2D and Microsoft’s concept, you have two kinds of converged. One is the converged infrastructure, where you have two kinds of converged systems.

  • For Storage, you leverage Scale-Out File Server with S2D
  • For Virtualization, you use for example Hyper-V which uses the Scale-out Fileserver as a storage device

In the following picture, you’ll see an example of converged infrastructure.

In the other option, you have what is called hyper-converged infrastructure. Here you put everything in one box, including the hypervisor and the necessary network and storage components. The picture below shows an example.

Both architectures have their up- and downsides and usage scenarios.

Now you may ask when you should use converged and when to use hyper-converged infrastructure. Let me explain some scenarios where you would use one over the other.

Hyper-converged (again, everything in one box) is a perfect fit for branch offices or locations like factories, where there is a need for certain IT services but you want to keep a small hardware footprint. You can also use hyper-converged infrastructure as a frontend for hybrid cloud services like Azure Files or Azure SQL to reduce latency and optimize specific workloads on-premises.

Converged scenarios instead should be used, when you have a bigger hardware footprint, like when you are hosting lots of applications on-prem or if you are a service provider in hosting or similar. In those scenarios, you often have workloads which do not scale equal when it comes to CPU, Memory, Storage or Network. Here you can scale the different parts of the infrastructure individually. If you need more Memory for your virtualization clusters, you can scale Memory of your hosts without touching the storage. If you need to increase storage capacity or throughput, you can add more storage hosts, disks, or even add more network cards to the storage nodes.

The Converged route is also great when you have a mix of virtualization technologies. You can use S2D with iSCSI, SMB or NFS from a Windows Server, which also gives you the option to connect non-Microsoft Hypervisors. With that, you have a very flexible infrastructure to enable all kinds of workloads.

How to License Storage Spaces Direct

The licensing of Storage Spaces Direct is pretty easy. To use Storage Spaces Direct you need to have Windows Server Datacenter Edition.


Now you would think, you that’s pretty expensive for a feature which I want to use only at a branch location. Yes, that is possibly right but not one hundred percent correct because there is something else you get on top of the datacenter license.

When you use Windows Server 2019 with Software Assurance or a Windows Server Subscription, you have license mobility and Hybrid Use Benefits. Hybrid Use Benefits enable Microsoft customers to use their Windows Server Datacenter Licenses on-prem and in Azure. The Azure Hybrid Benefit helps Microsoft customers to save up to 40 percent on virtual machines. I need to say, the saving is dependent on virtual machine size and region. Windows Server virtual machines in Azure will then have lower base compute rate equal to Linux virtual machine rates. PDP Gaming alleges Poly copied its logo

The gaming accessories company Performance Designed Products LLC has filed a federal lawsuit accusing Poly of using a knockoff of its logo as the centerpiece of a major rebranding initiative launched last week.

The lawsuit accuses Poly of violating federal trademark law through use of the new logo, which PDP Gaming argues is nearly identical to a logo it began using publicly in October 2018. It seeks monetary damages and a permanent injunction against Poly’s use of the logo.

“We do not comment on ongoing litigation generally, but we developed our logo independently and dispute the claims raised,” a Poly spokesperson said in a statement.

Plantronics acquired Polycom last year, and the two companies rebranded as Poly at the Enterprise Connect conference on March 18. The move was a significant and risky step for Poly, as it opted to retire two brands with strong name recognition.

In a press release, Poly said its new logo paid homage to the Polycom Trio conference room phone and to Plantronics’ history of making headsets for airplane pilots.

PDP Gaming developed its logo in March 2018, posted its logo online in October 2018, and began accepting pre-orders for a headset bearing the logo in January 2019, according to the company’s lawsuit, filed last week in U.S. District Court in southern California.

The lawsuit makes no mention of any attempt by PDP Gaming to gain formal recognition of its logo from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). However, such recognition is not necessary for bringing suit under certain sections of federal trademark law.

“The absence of a registration is not great, but it’s certainly not a significant problem either,” said Bruce Ewing, an intellectual property attorney and partner at Minneapolis-based Dorsey & Whitney LLP.

PDP Gaming-Poly logo dispute

In part, the lawsuit accuses Poly of violating a section of the law related to use of a symbol in a way that may cause confusion over the true origins of a product. PDP Gaming and the Plantronics division of Poly both make consumer headsets for gaming.

PDP Gaming’s relatively brief use of the logo could play in Poly’s favor, Ewing said. The court will take into account not just the marks but the words and marketing surrounding each. However, Poly may need to explain how it developed a logo of such a similar design.

“[PDP Gaming] has not been using the mark, this logo that it created, for all that long,” Ewing said. “So I think there is a legitimate question about the extent to which consumers associate that design with [PDP Gaming].”

PDP claims trademark approval pending

An attorney for PDP Gaming, Laura Chapman, of the Los Angeles-based firm Sheppard, Mullin, Richter & Hampton LLP, said in an email Thursday that her client had filed a trademark application for its logo with the USPTO. However, she did not respond to a follow-up question about when that request was lodged.

Poly filed a trademark request for its logo with the USPTO on Feb. 28. The lawsuit seeks denial of that application.

For Poly, the lawsuit is a public relations headache that comes at a significant moment in the merger of Plantronics and Polycom. But the court case is unlikely to affect products or the Poly name, said Zeus Kerravala, principal analyst at ZK Research, based in Westminster, Mass.

“It might make you raise your eyebrows as to how that could happen, but ultimately I don’t think it’s going to hurt Poly from a sales or marketing perspective,” Kerravala said. “At worst, it’s an embarrassing situation that they have to work through.”
