How to get the Windows 10 May 2019 Update | Windows Experience Blog

In early April, we announced enhancements to the Windows update process to improve the user experience with more control, transparency, and the initial availability of the Windows 10 May 2019 Update through the Windows Insider Program’s Release Preview ring to focus on and improve quality. Based on positive data and the feedback we’ve seen from this longer preview phase; I’m pleased today to share that we are beginning to make the Windows 10 May Update available. We will be taking a measured and throttled approach, allowing us to study device health data as we increase availability via Windows Update. This post will provide details on how you can get the May 2019 Update, including update options. I’ll also cover how commercial organizations can begin targeted deployments and offer insight into how we’re increasing transparency with the full launch of the new Windows health dashboard.
How to get the Windows 10 May 2019 UpdateBeginning today, the May 2019 Update is available for customers who would like to install the latest release. If you are ready to install the update, open your Windows Update settings (Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update) and select Check for updates. Once the update appears, you can select Download and install now. (Note: You may not see Download and install now on your device as we are slowly throttling up this availability, while we carefully monitor data and feedback). Once the download is complete and the update is ready to install, we’ll notify you so that you can pick the right time to finish the installation and reboot, ensuring the update does not disrupt you. This new ‘Download and install now’ capability is available for devices running Windows 10, version 1803 or version 1809 that also have the May 21st updates (or later) installed. For more information on the new user update controls and how to get the May 2019 Update, watch this video.
Windows 10 April 2018 Update approaching end of serviceFor Windows 10 devices that are at, or within several months of reaching, end of service, Windows Update will automatically initiate a feature update; keeping those devices supported and receiving the monthly updates that are critical to device security and ecosystem health. The Windows 10 April 2018 Update (Windows 10, version 1803) will reach end of service on November 12, 2019 for Home and Pro editions. Starting this June, we will begin updating devices running the April 2018 Update, and earlier versions of Windows 10, to ensure we can continue to service these devices and provide the latest updates, security updates and improvements. We are starting this machine learning (ML)-based rollout process several months in advance of the end of service date to provide adequate time for a smooth update process.
Semi-Annual Channel released for commercial customersWith today’s release of the May 2019 Update (Windows 10, version 1903), IT administrators should begin targeted deployments to validate that the apps, devices and infrastructure used by their organizations work as expected with the new release and features. Windows 10, version 1903 is available through Windows Server Update Services (WSUS), Windows Update for Business, and the Volume Licensing Service Center (VLSC)1 for phased deployment using System Center Configuration Manager or other systems management software. For information about the latest features for commercial customers, see What’s new for IT pros in Windows 10, version 1903. For specific information on what’s new with Windows Update for Business, see this blog post.
Increasing transparency: the Windows health dashboardAs part of our commitment to increasing transparency, the new Windows release health dashboard is now live, offering timely information on the current rollout status and known issues (open and resolved) across both feature and monthly updates. The new dashboard provides a single page for each currently supported version of Windows so you can quickly search for issues by keyword, including any safeguard holds on updates, see the current status of each issue, and find important announcements. In addition, you can easily share content via Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook and email, and even use Dark mode (the same popular feature recently introduced in Windows 10). Watch a walkthrough on all the new dashboard features in this video.
The May 2019 Update provides the best possible update experienceBeing on the latest version of Windows 10, the May 2019 Update, provides you with the latest features, more control over updates, and greater transparency for a better update experience. We will continue to work to improve Windows 10 quality and will be closely monitoring and sharing how the rollout is going, including both the current status and issues via the new Windows release health dashboard. We hope you enjoy this new update and encourage you to tell us about your experience by providing comments or suggestions via Feedback Hub.
Note:1 It may take a day for downloads to be fully available in the VLSC across all products, markets and languages.

Apptio buys Cloudability for cloud cost optimization

Apptio’s acquisition of cloud cost management vendor Cloudability reflects further market consolidation as more customers pursue multi-cloud strategies and seek to optimize their investments along the way.

Cloudability’s software provides real-time information about billing, rate and utilization of cloud services. In February, Cloudability rolled out a new initiative around FinOps, with the goal to connect finance and IT teams and manage cloud budgets more effectively.

This is a real challenge in the cloud, where fixed, upfront capital expenses, such as for software licenses and servers, become variable spending through subscription- and consumption-based models. Add in the fact that customers can procure cloud purchases in a more decentralized manner than legacy IT, and you have a recipe for complexity.

Once the deal closes, Apptio plans to align Cloudability’s technology with its own efforts around DevOps, reserved instance planning, forecasting and workflow integration with CI/CD tools, according to a statement.

Cloudability claims its software platform has 250 enterprise customers, and tracks more than $9 billion in spend across AWS, Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud.

This deal is expected to complete in the current quarter. Terms were not disclosed.

Deal marks wave of cloud cost consolidation

Apptio went private in November 2018 through a $1.9 billion buyout from Vista Equity Partners. Often, companies do that to regroup and retool their plans away from the glare and demands of public markets.

Owen Rogers, 451 ResearchOwen Rogers

Vista, like other PE firms, has somewhat of a reputation for cost-cutting after it buys a company. However, the purse strings were apparently open for Apptio to buy Cloudability. And Apptio’s shopping trip may have been fairly brief.

Cloudability was one of few remaining cloud cost reporting platforms in the market, and an acquisition by a service provider or management platform has been in the cards for a while, said Owen Rogers, director of the digital economics unit at 451 Research.

Cloud providers have built better reporting dashboards themselves in the past few years, he added. In turn, several Cloudability competitors have been acquired, such as with Microsoft’s purchase of Cloudyn in 2017.

The market is now moving towards cost optimization, not just cost reporting.
Owen RogersDirector of the digital economics unit, 451 Research

Apptio previously acquired Raveld, another cloud cost management vendor, in 2012. That led to a service called Apptio Cloud Express.

“The market is now moving towards cost optimization, not just cost reporting,” Rogers added. Apptio has also followed this trend with the acquisitions of FittedCloud in October 2018 and Digital Fuel in February 2018, Rogers said.

Cost optimization will become even more crucial as enterprises push into multi-cloud and hybrid cloud deployments. The industry writ large has moved in this direction over the past couple of years, with the emergence of software platforms such as Google Anthos, VMWare’s support for AWS, and tie-ups such as Microsoft’s work with Red Hat to support OpenShift on Azure.

Micro apps, AI to power new version of Citrix Workspace

Citrix is adding AI, automation and micro app capabilities to its Workspace product.

The new version of Citrix Workspace will be unveiled during the main keynote at Citrix Synergy, which takes place next week in Atlanta.

Citrix Workspace gives IT admins virtual access to an organization’s desktop and applications. Using data Citrix has gathered from interacting with an organization’s business applications, it will now apply AI and automation to create a streamlined action for the user and surface all of an end user’s business applications in one interface.

“Citrix sits in a position where it can catch a lot of information,” said Mark Bowker, analyst at Enterprise Strategy Group in Milford, Mass. “The company gains a lot of information from the users and the applications and the networks and data, and there’s value in that. Citrix is taking that information and allowing users to make more intelligent decisions from that information.”

The new version of Citrix Workspace will also include micro apps — small, task-based applications — to complete processes that previously took users multiple steps and application toggling to complete.

Sapho acquisition is lynchpin

The micro app capability and the foundation for the rendition of Citrix Workspace are primarily thanks to the company’s acquisition of Sapho, a micro app provider and development platform.

A screenshot of Citrix Workspace shows how a manager can act on a process like approving an expense report with a single click, without toggling between applications. Citrix is expected to unveil more at Citrix Synergy.
A screenshot of Citrix Workspace shows how a manager can act on a process like approving an expense report with a single click, without toggling between applications. Citrix is expected to unveil more at Citrix Synergy.

The $200 million acquisition was seen as a clear opportunity to improve a user’s workflow within Workspace. In February, three months after Citrix acquired Sapho, David Le Strat, vice president of product management for Citrix, penned a blog post that outlined the same sentiment and called the acquisition part of the company’s future-of-work strategy.

“We are helping customers take the next steps in that journey by evolving Citrix Workspace to guide and automate work and minimize busy work,” he wrote. “With the Sapho acquisition, Citrix accelerates its vision for productivity in the workspace.”

The new version of Citrix Workspace has been described by Citrix employees as a Facebook-like timeline for the end user. It allows a user to act on all of their business applications within one feed. The end result is a single interface where admins can click through their daily responsibilities. For example, a manager can approve expense reports with one click or dig deeper if the report is suspect and requires further inspection.

This is an attempt by Citrix to take the business applications and business processes and be able to put them in consumable, bite-size pieces for the end users.
Mark BowkerAnalyst, Enterprise Strategy Group

“Integration of the Sapho technology augments existing Citrix Workspace capabilities by making line-of-business transactions available and actionable as a simple, unified and intelligent work feed,” Le Strat wrote. “Actions, tasks and data are aggregated across applications to provide a consolidated place for initiating new micro workflows.”

Bowker echoed Le Strat’s statement, adding that, due to the Sapho acquisition, Citrix could act on all of the information it gathers by sitting in the middle of users’ applications and IT’s infrastructure.

“This is an attempt by Citrix to take the business applications and business processes and be able to put them in consumable, bite-size pieces for the end users,” Bowker said.

He added that Citrix is in a unique situation to capitalize on this information compared to competitors, namely VMware.

“VMware’s approach from an overall intelligence and analytics perspective is comparable [to Citrix]. But, from a micro app approach, this is something VMware isn’t doing from a customer perspective.”

Citrix is expected to unveil more product news at Synergy, as well as provide more details surrounding the new version of Citrix Workspace.
