Citrix’s performance analytics service gets granular

Citrix introduced an analytics service to help IT professionals better identify the cause of slow application performance within its Virtual Apps and Desktops platform.

The company announced the general availability of the service, called Citrix Analytics for Performance, at its Citrix Summit, an event for the company’s business partners, in Orlando on Monday. The service carries an additional cost.

Steve Wilson, the company’s vice president of product for workspace ecosystem and analytics, said many IT admins must deal with performance problems as part of the nature of distributed applications. When they receive a call from workers complaining about performance, he said, it’s hard to determine the root cause — be it a capacity issue, a network problem or an issue with the employee’s device.

Performance, he said, is a frequent pain point for employees, especially remote and international workers.

“There are huge challenges that, from a performance perspective, are really hard to understand,” he said, adding that the tools available to IT professionals have not been ideal in identifying issues. “It’s all been very technical, very down in the weeds … it’s been hard to understand what [users] are seeing and how to make that actionable.”

Part of the problem, according to Wilson, is that traditional performance-measuring tools focus on server infrastructure. Keeping track of such metrics is important, he said, but they do not tell the whole story.

“Often, what [IT professionals] got was the aggregate view; it wasn’t personalized,” he said.

When the aggregate performance of the IT infrastructure is “good,” Wilson said, that could mean that half an organization’s users are seeing good performance, a quarter are seeing great performance, but a quarter are experiencing poor performance.

With its performance analytics service, Citrix is offering a more granular picture of performance by providing metrics on individual employees, beyond those of the company as a whole. That measurement, which Citrix calls a user experience or UX score, evaluates such factors as an employee’s machine performance, user logon time, network latency and network stability.

“With this tool, as a system administrator, you can come in and see the entire population,” Wilson said. “It starts with the top-level experience score, but you can very quickly break that down [to personal performance].”

Wilson said IT admins who had tested the product said this information helped them address performance issues more expeditiously.

“The feedback we’ve gotten is that they’ve been able to very quickly get to root causes,” he said. “They’ve been able to drill down in a way that’s easy to understand.”

A proactive approach

Eric Klein, analyst, VDC Research GroupEric Klein

Eric Klein, analyst at VDC Research Group Inc., said the service represents a more proactive approach to performance problems, as opposed to identifying issues through remote access of an employee’s computer.

“If something starts to degrade from a performance perspective — like an app not behaving or slowing down — you can identify problems before users become frustrated,” he said.

Mark Bowker, senior analyst, Enterprise Strategy GroupMark Bowker

Klein said IT admins would likely welcome any tool that, like this one, could “give time back” to them.

“IT is always being asked to do more with less, though budgets have slowly been growing over the past few years,” he said. “[Administrators] are always looking for tools that will not only automate processes but save time.”

Enterprise Strategy Group senior analyst Mark Bowker said in a press release from Citrix announcing the news that companies must examine user experience to ensure they provide employees with secure and consistent access to needed applications.

“Key to providing this seamless experience is having continuous visibility into network systems and applications to quickly spot and mitigate issues before they affect productivity,” he said in the release.

Wilson said the performance analytics service was the product of Citrix’s push to the cloud during the past few years. One of the early benefits of that process, he said, has been in the analytics field; the company has been able to apply machine learning to the data it has garnered and derive insights from it.

“We do see a broad opportunity around analytics,” he said. “That’s something you’ll see more and more of from us.”

Protect against BlueKeep

Worms are the cause of many cyber headaches. They can easily replicate themselves to spread malicious malware to other computers in your network. As the field responders providing Microsoft enterprise customers with onsite assistance to serious cybersecurity threats, our Detection and Response Team (DART) has seen quite a few worms. If you’ve met the DART Team, then you know your worms are our concern and that’s why we keep an eye out for BlueKeep.

Protect against BlueKeep

This summer, the DART team has been preparing for CVE-2019-0708, colloquially known as BlueKeep, and has some advice on how you can protect your network. The BlueKeep vulnerability is “wormable,” meaning it creates the risk of a large-scale outbreak due to its ability to replicate and propagate, similar to Conficker and WannaCry. Conficker has been widely estimated to have impacted 10- to 12-million computer systems worldwide. WannaCry was responsible for approximately $300 million in damages at just one global enterprise.

To protect against BlueKeep, we strongly recommend you apply the Windows Update, which includes a patch for the vulnerability. If you use Remote Desktop in your environment, it’s very important to apply all the updates. If you have Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) listening on the internet, we also strongly encourage you to move the RDP listener behind some type of second factor authentication, such as VPN, SSL Tunnel, or RDP gateway.

You also want to enable Network Level Authentication (NLA), which is a mitigation to prevent un-authenticated access to the RDP tunnel. NLA forces users to authenticate before connecting to remote systems, which dramatically decreases the chance of success for RDP-based worms. The DART team highly recommends you enable NLA regardless of this patch, as it mitigates a whole slew of other attacks against RDP.

If you’re already aware of the BlueKeep remediation methods, but are thinking about testing it before going live, we recommend that you deploy the patch. It’s important to note that the exploit code is now publicly and widely available to everyone, including malicious actors. By exploiting a vulnerable RDP system, attackers will also have access to all user credentials used on the RDP system.

Why the urgency?

Via open source telemetry, we see more than 400,000 endpoints lacking any form of network level authentication, which puts each of these systems potentially at risk from a worm-based weaponization of the BlueKeep vulnerability.

The timeline between patch release and the appearance of a worm outbreak is difficult to predict and varies from case to case. As always, the DART team is ready for the worst-case scenario. We also want to help our customers be prepared, so we’re sharing a few previous worms and the timeline from patch to attack. Hopefully, this will encourage everyone to patch immediately.

Intel Meltdown patches pulled with little explanation

Intel said it has identified the cause of the reboot issues related to firmware updates assumed to be the Spectre and Meltdown patches, but hasn’t offered much more information than that.

It is widely assumed the Spectre and Meltdown patches led systems running on Intel Broadwell and Haswell chips to reboot. However, when Intel announced the problem on Jan. 11, the company only admitted that customers saw “higher system reboots after applying firmware updates.” So far, Intel has been careful to avoid mentioning the Spectre and Meltdown patches in connection to the reboot issues with Broadwell and Haswell chips.

Despite not outright admitting the connection, Intel has pulled its Spectre and Meltdown patches while it tests an updated version of the fix. The company said it has now discovered the “root cause” of the reboot issues and has “made good progress in developing a solution to address it.”

“We recommend that OEMs, cloud service providers, system manufacturers, software vendors and end users stop deployment of current versions, as they may introduce higher than expected reboots and other unpredictable system behavior,” Navin Shenoy, executive vice president and general manager of the data center group at Intel, wrote in a blog post. “We ask that our industry partners focus efforts on testing early versions of the updated solution so we can accelerate its release. We expect to share more details on timing later this week.”

Bob Noel, director of strategic relationships and marketing for Plixer, a network traffic analysis company based in Kennebunk, Maine, said the current unstable code for the Spectre and Meltdown patches “leaves end users vulnerable, with no available options other than to wait for a stable fix.”

“In times like these, customers should be extra vigilant to ensure they have not been compromised. Network traffic analytics should be used to monitor their environment for anomalous traffic patterns and unusual behaviors,” Noel told SearchSecurity. “The secondary problem this unstable patch code creates is a general hesitancy for end users to quickly apply future patches. Early adopters of these patches experienced hardware reboots and downtime, which is likely to leave them wary of becoming early adopters for future patches.”

Ben Johnson, CTO at Obsidian, based in Newport Beach, Calif., and former National Security Agency computer scientist, agreed the way Intel has handled the Spectre and Meltdown patches may harm customer trust.

“Consumers have no patience for perceived inactivity when it comes to vulnerabilities or security issues, so organizations want to take action as soon as a vulnerability becomes public. But if you roll out a patch without proper testing, you can exacerbate the problem by paralyzing your system and your workforce, as Intel and Dell’s customers found out over the past week,” Johnson told SearchSecurity. “This is particularly problematic, because one of the biggest issues in security is getting people to patch vulnerabilities. Incidents like this just make matters worse because they make IT teams gun-shy. Your customers need to have faith that, when you roll out a patch, it isn’t going to hammer their system. If they don’t trust you, they won’t patch.”

Linus Torvalds, creator of Linux, had much harsher words for Intel’s handling of the situation and called the Spectre and Meltdown patches “complete and utter garbage.”

“I’m sure there is some lawyer there who says ‘we’ll have to go through motions to protect against a lawsuit.’ But legal reasons do not make for good technology, or good patches that I should apply,” Torvalds wrote in a Linux Kernel Mailing List post. “[The patches] do literally insane things. They do things that do not make sense. That makes all your arguments questionable and suspicious. The patches do things that are not sane … I think we need something better than this garbage.”
