Windows 10 issues top list of most read stories for IT pros

Windows 10 — and the challenges posed to IT professionals by its updates — dominated the enterprise desktop discussion in 2019. Troubleshooting and understanding the eccentricities of 2019’s Windows 10 issues comprised many of our top 10 most popular stories this year.

With the sunset of Windows 7 scheduled for the first month of 2020, interest in other Microsoft OSes, including Windows 10, may intensify in the coming year.

Below is a countdown of the top ten most-read SearchEnterpriseDesktop stories, based on page views.

  1. Micro apps, AI to power new version of Citrix Workspace

Citrix announced a new version of Citrix Workspace, which enables IT admins to provide employees with virtual access to an organization’s desktop and applications, at May’s Citrix Synergy event in Atlanta. The company cited micro apps or small, task-based applications as a key feature, saying they would handle complicated tasks more efficiently by bringing them into a unified work feed. The addition of micro apps was made possible through a $200 million acquisition of Sapho in 2018.

  1. Lenovo to launch ThinkBook brand, next-gen ThinkPad x1

Lenovo started a new subbrand — called ThinkBook — this past spring, with two laptops aimed at younger employees in the workforce. The 13- and 14-inch laptops were intended to incorporate a sleek design with robust security, reliability and support services. The company also launched a laptop for advanced business users, ThinkPad X1 Extreme Gen 2, and the ultrasmall desktop ThinkCentre M90n-1 Nano in the same time frame.

  1. Learn about the device-as-a-service model and its use cases

The device-as-a-service model, in which a vendor leases devices to a business, may help IT admins fulfill their responsibility to support, maintain and repair equipment. The model has its pros and cons. It can provide a single point of contact for troubleshooting and enable more frequent hardware refreshes, but it can also limit an organization’s device choices and pose complications for a company’s BYOD plan.

  1. Lenovo powers new ThinkPad series with AMD Ryzen Pro processors

Lenovo released three Windows 10 laptops with AMD processors this past spring, the first time it has used non-Intel chips in its higher-end ThinkPad T and X series devices. The company hoped its T495, T495s and X395 computers would provide better performance and security at a lower cost; the company said the AMD-powered T and X series laptops saw an 18% increase over the previous generation.

  1. Windows 10 security breach highlights third-party vulnerabilities

Microsoft detected a security vulnerability in Windows 10, introduced through Huawei PCManager driver software. Microsoft Defender Advanced Threat Protection, a feature that finds and blocks potential compromises, found the problem before the vulnerability could cause serious damage, but industry professionals said the incident highlighted the risks posed by third-party kernels such as device drivers and the importance of working with trusted companies.

  1. Samsung Notebook 9 Pro 2-in-1 impresses with specs and looks

Samsung released a redesign of its flagship Windows 10 laptop this year, opting for an aluminum chassis in place of the plastic from previous iterations. The device offered comparable specs to other high-end laptop offerings, with a slate of features including a backlit keyboard, a variety of inputs and the Samsung Active Pen.

  1. With the new Windows 10 OS update, trust but verify

Dave Sobel, senior director and managed services provider at SolarWinds in Austin, Texas, expounded on the then-forthcoming May 2019 Windows 10 update a month before its scheduled release. Sobel acknowledged the security importance of patching systems but stressed that IT professionals remain vigilant for complications — notable, as the Windows 10 update came in the wake of an October 2018 patch that deleted files of users who work with Known Folder redirection.

  1. Citrix CEO David Henshall addresses Citrix news, sale rumors

In a Q&A, Citrix CEO David Henshall talked about the future of the 30-year-old company, downplaying rumors that it would be sold. Henshall spoke of the venerable firm’s history of connecting people and information on demand and saw the coming years as a time when Citrix would continue to simplify and ease that connection to encourage productivity.

  1. Latest Windows 10 update issues cause more freezing problems

The April 9 Windows 10 update caused device freezing upon launch. Those in IT had already noted freezing in devices using Sophos Endpoint Protection; after a few days, they learned that the patch was clashing with antivirus software, causing freezing both during startup and over the course of regular operation of the computer. Microsoft updated its support page to acknowledge the issue and provided workarounds shortly thereafter.

  1. 1. IT takes the good with the bad in Windows 10 1903 update

After experiencing problems with previous Windows 10 updates, June’s 1903 version came with initial positive — but wary — reception. Microsoft’s Windows-as-a-service model drew complaints for the way it implemented updates. Among its changes, 1903 enabled IT professionals to pause feature and monthly updates for up to 35 days. Also new was Windows Sandbox, providing IT with the ability to test application installations without compromising a machine. The new version of Windows 10 did not launch bug-free, however; issues with Wi-Fi connectivity, Bluetooth device connection and USB devices causing the rearrangement of drive letters were reported.

    Hi,

After a cheap laptop for my father in law if someone wants to sell. His got stolen last week and it’s a bit of a mess for him.

needs it to print labels for a business he is trying to start and general word/office, internet and social media (advertising) use

So don’t need it to be heavy spec as long as reasonably newish to last him some time as he tries to recover money.

Budget is approx £100 +- so happy to take the best I can get.

I can pick up in London or Watford surrounding areas if needed.

    Location: Watford

Hi dwpman, thanks for the quick response. Think he is looking for a bigger screen – 15″ or thereabouts but will run this by him.

Hi krooner, thanks for your message. I think the price for him is a bit too high given the age, spec and need to buy charger. Could you do it for lower, appreciate if you can’t.

Krooner, would you be able to give more info on condition and specs on the HP TPN-C130 you posted elsewhere?

Would you be willing to negotiate a little in that one for a quick sale? Say £125 posted if all checks out?

    As stated on the other thread specs are;

    15″ Screen
    2.5GHz AMD A6-9220 CPU
    Radeon R4 Graphics
    4GB RAM
    256GB SSD
    Windwos 10 Home

However price on it is firm, as I’m actually selling for a friend. He wanted me to put it up on eBay on the next £1 deal thing. It’s in excellent condition, he’s only had it for about a year. Got a ProBook given from work so he’s not using it.

    SAM_4248.JPG SAM_4249.JPG SAM_4250.JPG SAM_4251.JPG SAM_4252.JPG SAM_4253.JPG

RE the L420: I think it’s cheap at the £80. still decently spec’d and chargers can be had on eBay for about £6.

Thanks Krooner. How old is the L420 and is it fairly smooth (ie not too laggy) as that would probably work?

It’s not really laggy at all I wouldn’t have said, I was using it with an SSD in until mid August and it was nice. Obviously it could do with a bit more RAM if you were going to be using it longer term, but for his needs it should do the job.

I’m not 100% on it’s age but the latest Thinkpads are 80 series, so it’s got to be five or six.

Ok thanks. Just realised it’s 14″ so might be a bit too small. I’ll ask about the HP but think it may just be out of budget for him. Let me know if your friend can do anything at all on price and I can get the deal done asap.

We would drop it to £140 to be rid, but it’s the £1 FVF this weekend and I’m confident we will get the £150 for it TBH.

He reckons he bought it last Summer so I’d assume it’s out of the years warranty. He says he’ll check his Currys/PC World history. (EDIT – June 2018)

He did buy it new yes, £300 with a 500gb HDD & 4GB ram, so he’s dropped the SSD and RAM in himself.

Hi there, could well be interested in this. Could I just ask a few questions such as age of the device the condition (i.e any notable marks, scratches, keyboard wear etc)? Also, is there a way of checking the battery health at all?

Many thanks and look forward to hearing.

      Hi Nate,
      Thanks for the queries
The Chromebook is in remarkable condition with zero scratches on both the outer casing or inside, i will double check thoroughly tonight when i get home from work.

I just seen a command that can be run to determine battery health and the number of cycles, so i will also run this tonight as well and update you.

From my own usage i can confirm the battery life is pretty exceptional, i would personally get 3-4 days usage from a single battery charge. The standby time is currently amazing, as i charged it fully 10+ days ago and it is still in the 90%+ range

Thanks for coming back to me. I actually had one up until a couple of years ago and sort of regretted ever selling it really. It’s a bit of a ‘nostalgia’ purchase but it sounds like you have really looked after it and so all being well, if there is still plenty of battery health and it comes boxed etc then I’d be interested.

Look forward to hearing later. Take care…

      Hi nate,

Below battery stats: amazingly the battery cycle count is only 26 so you can see how little use i have had of it and why it’s in such good condition!

Battery Health is touching on 96%

I should point out i don’t have the original box for chromebook. However it will be packaged and sent securely for anyone who purchases.

      Thanks

      @midgelfc

So tempted by this, however not quite sure what my overall usage would be if at all. Very much an impulse purchase so will just have to give it some thought. Definitely a great little machine and in great condition. I expect speed wise it still keeps up with anything out there given how light Chrome OS is on the device. So to anybody else looking who (unlike me) doesn’t already have a laptop. I think it’s s great price for an underrated machine.

Am I right in thinking Chromebooks receive updates for only a limited time?

I just updated it the other day, so it’s still receiving updates

    14. Just to jump in here; last I knew the Pixel stopped receiving updates and the latest one (last week) came very much out of the blue as support was officially ceased.

      Very well kept machine

Itching to get my hands on a decent Chromebook.
Yours is everything i’m looking for spec wise. it’s the age of the machine.,plus i guess it wont be getting many more updates.
I’ll offer £250 which i realise is way lowere than your looking for. If it was a newer model and more likeley to revceive Updates. Would have raised my offer accordingly.
      Regards

Cheers for the offer, that is a bit too much below my asking price sorry.

Just with regards to updates this Chromebook Pixel is to keep receiving updates until June 2020, as stated here direct from Google, so till some life left in it

Noticed a few of the Older MBPs going up for Sale.
Thought I might try and move mine on. I’ll check but I think it’s a late 2010 Uni Body.
I’ll list the Good and Bad points
    Good:
New Battery Fitted about 2 Months ago.
Came with 4 gig of Ram upgraded to 8 gig
Installed 240 Gig SSD for the main OS
    Currently running High Sierra.
Replaced the DVD drive with Terrabyte HD.
    Has a Speck Cover Case
Screen is fine. Though non Retina.
    Bad Points:
Sound is quite low from the laptop speakers.
Though fine through the Headphone Port or via Bluetooth.
I think I might have dislodged a cable on the board when I was changing out the DVD drive.
It’s never bothered me,but I guess if anyone wants to open it up shouldn’t be hard to fix.
Couple if light scratches on the case.
One of the rubber feet is missing from the base.
With the Speck Bottom case it has feet of a sort,.
    Can’t think of anything else.
Don’t have the Original Box. Do have the original charger.
Would be well packed for shipped or can be collected from Glasgow.
    Thanks
    Ian

Wanted – 15 inch laptop

Discussion in ‘Laptop, Notebook & Macbook Classifieds‘ started by barrywi, Aug 28, 2019.

  1. Thinking about binning my PC box and getting an equivalent laptop. I would love an Apple but I think they would be expensive .
So my ideal spec would be 15 inch screen, 512 SSD plus 1 tb or more hard drive, CD drive if possible.
Full HD resolution with HDMI connection. Not too bothered about a mega processor as long as it loads quick. Not too old .Any suggestions?

May have this, need to check, … I do though have a ASUS A8N32-SLI Deluxe if that’d fit the bill.

That was a good board and one I think I changed to from the dfi back in the day as was more reliable.

I’m using a nf4 ut in a mame cabinet, and can’t be bothered to do a more modern install. I’ve actually got mine working again now, turns out it was the power supply. However I’d still be interested in picking up a fully working example as a back up.

OK, that works better for me, as no urgency to have a look, but will do, as soon as I find the time and patience, storage sections’s a bit of a mess, too much stuff , will let you know.
