For Trade – (or Sale) Macbook Pro 2017 – 13″, i5 3.1GHz, Touch Bar, Warranty to Sept 2020

So this will be an interesting thread…

I’m looking to Part-Ex my existing MacBook Pro for one of lower value. It’s overkill for my needs (it’s that age old thing.. you buy something way more high spec than you need!)

Specs of MacBook are as follows:

Macbook Pro 13″ 2017 TouchBar Version
Core i5 @ 3.1GHz
250GB SSD
8GB RAM
Intel Iris Graphics are 1536MB
AppleCare Coverage to September 2020
Battery Cycle count is 4 (It’s pretty much lives on the mains)
Condition is excellent, the only reason I’m not classing it as mint is because its not brand new

Comes boxed with power adapter and would while preference would be to deal in person, I’m open to postage for the right offer. As you can imagine, insurance on the delivery will be at a premium, ballpark prices are about £40 delivery alone.

Ideally, I’d like to come out of this with a minimum of £200 cash from any prospective buyer depending on the item they are trading. Otherwise, I’m happy to sell for £1100. Even on the refurb store, this MacBook goes for £1489 before you purchase additional AppleCare.

Price and currency: £1150
Delivery: Delivery cost is included within my country
Payment method: BT/PPG
Location: Basingstoke
Advertised elsewhere?: Not advertised elsewhere
Prefer goods collected?: I prefer the goods to be collected

Microsoft’s subsea speed monster: A cable 16 million times faster than your broadband | ZDNet

The new Marea cable lies to the south of existing transatlantic subsea cables.

Microsoft, Facebook and Telefonica have hit a key milestone in delivering their new trans-Atlantic subsea cable with a data capacity of 160 terabits per second.

Telefonica subsidiary Telxius has finished laying the Microsoft- and Facebook-backed Marea subsea cable, which stretches 4,000 miles (6,600km) across the Atlantic ocean from Virginia Beach, Virginia, to Bilbao in northern Spain.

Microsoft boasts that its 160-terabit/s cable is 16 million times faster than your home broadband and could stream 71 million HD videos simultaneously. The cable contains eight pairs of fiber-optic threads wrapped in copper.

Telxius, which will operate the cable once it goes live, began construction in August 2016.

Marea, Spanish for ‘tide’, offers Facebook and Microsoft more global capacity for their data services, but also improved resilience thanks to landing at different points to most networks, which on the US side come ashore around New York and New Jersey.

The route is south of existing transatlantic cables. Microsoft of course has a massive data center in Virginia too, on which it’s reportedly spent $1.1bn. Facebook and Amazon also have data centers there.

Marea continues the trend of tech giants investing in their own high-capacity subsea cables, rather than merely leasing them from other operators.

As Wired noted recently, the Marea cable noteworthy in that Microsoft and Facebook have more control over its future than if they joined a consortium of telecoms providers, as Microsoft did with six Asian telco firms to launch the New Cross Pacific Cable.

They also don’t need to share capacity with other telecoms providers. Google, meanwhile, has backed the 60-terabit/s Faster cable, which spans 5,600 miles (9,000km) between Japan and the US west coast and gives Google exclusive access to part of its capacity.

According to Microsoft, Marea is the highest-capacity connection of more than a dozen trans-Atlantic subsea cables. Marea also connects to nearby Sopelana, which links up with fiber networks connecting to other major European hubs like Paris, Frankfurt, Amsterdam, and London.

Microsoft also points out that Bilbao offers a convenient path to hubs in Africa, the Middle East, and Asia.

For Microsoft, the cable will help it improve its various cloud services, such as Azure, Office 365, Skype and Xbox Live. Facebook says it will help it improve the “increasingly data-intensive services” that it provides through WhatsApp, Messenger, Facebook, and Instagram.

The cable is expected to become operational in early 2018, according to Microsoft.

Microsoft, Red Hat expand focus on containers and DevOps

Microsoft and Red Hat expanded their existing cloud partnership with new moves to simplify the adoption of containers and support for DevOps in enterprises.

The new initiatives from the two companies include native support for Windows Server containers and DevOps on Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform, Red Hat OpenShift Dedicated on Microsoft Azure, and SQL Server on Red Hat Enterprise Linux and OpenShift. Red Hat OpenShift Dedicated on Microsoft Azure is expected to be available in early 2018.

“The expansion of the Red Hat and Microsoft alliance provides a broad platform for mixed containerized workloads, which helps developers and IT operations teams working in heterogeneous environments to continue driving toward DevOps, without worrying about maintaining separate workflows and software stacks,” said Mike Ferris, vice president of cloud strategy at Red Hat, based in Raleigh, N.C.

“Additionally, Red Hat OpenShift Dedicated will be available on Microsoft Azure, expanding the choice of cloud providers for IT organizations seeking to leverage cloud services for container development and deployment without having to maintain and scale their own infrastructure,” he said.

Expansion of 2-year-old alliance

Microsoft and Red Hat initiated their alliance two years ago, targeting hybrid cloud by providing enterprises with the choice of deploying Red Hat offerings, including Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL), on Microsoft Azure.

This partnership differs from other cloud offerings by targeting the Windows and RHEL user base, providing a common framework for managing hybrid cloud app development [and] deployment through the OpenShift container platform.
Charlotte Dunlapprincipal analyst at GlobalData

“This partnership differs from other cloud offerings by targeting the Windows and RHEL user base, providing a common framework for managing hybrid cloud app development [and] deployment through the OpenShift Container Platform,” said Charlotte Dunlap, principal analyst at GlobalData. “This week’s agreement builds on the 2015 deal in which Microsoft began offering RHEL as an Azure service, targeting .NET customers,” she added.

“This partnership is a powerful win for enterprises, ISVs [independent software vendors] and developers,” said Scott Guthrie, executive vice president for Microsoft’s cloud and enterprise division, at the time of the initial agreement.

Now, Red Hat and Microsoft say they will extend the integrated, colocated Microsoft and Red Hat support to enable these new offerings across platforms. This move enhances support for containers and DevOps for enterprise customers.

As most organizations do not run a single infrastructure stack, and many have both Windows and Linux, expansion of the Red Hat-Microsoft alliance can help enterprises to break down silos and adopt containers and DevOps practices across the environments.

Support for Kubernetes, Azure Stack, SQL Server

Red Hat claims with Windows Server supporting Red Hat OpenShift, OpenShift will be the first container application platform built from the open source Kubernetes project to support both Linux and Windows Server container workloads in a single platform across hybrid cloud environments.

Red Hat demonstrated this capability at its Red Hat Summit in May 2017, and it is expected to be available as a Technology Preview in spring 2018.

“Microsoft and Red Hat are aligned in our commitment to bring enterprise customers the hybrid cloud solutions they need to modernize their businesses as they shift to operate in a cloud-native world,” said John Gossman, Microsoft’s lead Azure architect, in a statement.

Meanwhile, Microsoft and Red Hat said they plan to also collaborate on delivering integrated support for Red Hat Enterprise Linux workloads on Azure Stack, Microsoft’s on-premises extension of Azure.

Red Hat announced the availability of .NET Core 2.0 as a container in OpenShift. And the two companies also said SQL Server for Linux will be available in the coming months on Red Hat Enterprise Linux and OpenShift.

Charles King, principal analyst at Pund-IT, said he believes the Microsoft-Red Hat agreement is a good example of the increasing common, customer-focused partnerships IT vendors are pursuing.

“Container technologies have appeared and become so successful so quickly that one vendor or platform dominating the market was a realistic expectation,” he said.

Yet, in a blog post, Chris Morgan, technical director of OpenShift ecosystem at Red Hat, said, “the goal of the truly unified container application platform may not be as farfetched as it once seemed.”

Also, for her part, GlobalData’s Dunlap noted, “Hybrid cloud messaging among vendors will become more convoluted as we move into the fall’s set of megaconferences by VMware, Oracle, Salesforce and others, each pushing its own core strengths — such as virtualization, business suites and SaaS — for moving enterprise apps into containerization and the cloud.”

Announcing the new and improved Azure Log Analytics

The Azure Log Analytics service is rolling out an upgrade to existing customers today – offering powerful search, smart analytics, and even deeper insights. This upgrade provides an interactive query language and an advanced analytics portal, powered by a highly scalable data store resembling Azure Application Insights. This creates a consistent monitoring experience for IT operations and developers.

In the biggest upgrade since its launch, the new and improved Azure Log Analytics brings you a simple yet very powerful query language with all the capabilities requested in the language feedback. Over the last couple of months, we have been working closely with 60+ customers who had early access to the upgrade, and their feedback has been very positive regarding the enhanced experience and capabilities of the new language. Here are some of their quotes, I would like to share with you:

“Wizards of the Coast was fortunate enough to gain early access to Azure Log Analytics upgrade and it has been instrumental in our ability to diagnose issues within our code base and environments, and to view on a large scale the overall performance. The portal implementation is intuitive, and the query language is extremely easy to understand, and the IntelliSense implementation is refined and extremely helpful in its implementation.”

–Scott Thomas, Infrastructure & Platform Architect, Wizards of the Coast

“I just got our workspace upgraded and the new query language is awesome (so far)! The queries are lightning fast, IntelliSense works great, and I can now do the aggregations I couldn’t do before. This is light-years ahead of the old query engine. Bravo!”

–Microsoft IT

With the new query language, we can carve up Log Analytics data in any way we need to visualize it. Key benefits include the ability to use unions, joins, functions and variables. We have been able to create queries which would not have been possible with the original query language. The upgrade experience was seamless and existing queries were converted automatically. Even with custom solutions which we had developed for Log Analytics the conversion was very straightforward.”

–Cameron Fuller, Principal Consultant, Catapult Systems

Why should I upgrade?

This upgrade opens endless possibilities, but here are some of the brand new key capabilities available immediately after the upgrade, which takes only a few seconds, in most cases.

Powerful query language with built in Smart Analytics

The query language provides powerful search, query time field extractions, calculated fields, joins and unions, as well as rich date time operators, string operators and native JSON support. The query language also supports let statements, lambda expressions and comments in queries, an extremely important feature to modularize the queries, especially when sharing queries with colleagues or using them for live site support and troubleshooting. The query language offers flexible machine learning constructs and time series functions to help customers get deeper insights into their data. For instance, the time series functions help analyze CPU performance from hundreds of computers and select the top N based on usage spikes. There are numerous other capabilities included in the language, which can be further explored in the Azure Log Analytics resource.

Now let’s look at some examples for these, in the context of scenarios. All of the queries shown in the examples below were not feasible in the previous query language.

This query calculates whether a service-level agreement (SLA) was met based on IIS call duration. To try it for yourself, click to run the query.

2017-08-06_09h20_46

This example using joins, shows a list of missing security updates, for computers with a high severity security alert detection for the last day. To try it for yourself, click to run the query.

2017-08-06_09h24_07

Here is another example using time series analysis for analyzing the CPU performance of several computers and narrowing it down to the two most relevant. To try it for yourself, click to run the query.

2017-08-06_09h16_26

Advanced Analytics Portal

The Advanced Analytics portal gives you the best experience for writing interactive ad hoc queries, whether it is for troubleshooting, diagnostics, analyzing trends or creating quick visualizations. This game-changing experience provides multi-line editing features with context-aware syntax highlighting and powerful built-in visualizations. You can save and share queries and export data to Excel.

2017-08-06_08h50_49

Azure Portal, Power BI Desktop and Microsoft Flow Connector Integration

Now with one click, create a quick visualization on Analytics portal and pin the visualization to a shared Azure Dashboard. This enables you to create a single pane of glass across different workspaces, Azure resources and applications.

2017-08-06_08h46_50

With this upgrade, you have a much more powerful integration with Power BI Desktop, the same type of integration as in Application Insights. You can take advantage of additional Power BI visualizations, publish and share them with your colleagues on PowerBI.com and enable automatic daily reports. Finally, you can now integrate with Microsoft Flow and Azure Logic Apps, enabling you to create business flows, notifications, and much more.

How to upgrade

This is probably the simplest upgrade process you’ll experience. Within the application you’ll see a banner prompting you to upgrade, and with just one click, it will enhance your workspace – automatically converting all your artifacts, such as saved searches, views, alerts, and computer groups. Later, all non-upgraded workspaces will automatically be upgraded to the new query language and the platform. Learn more about upgrade process and FAQs in Azure documentation.

2017-08-04_23h32_24

Language documentation, learning tools and community

The Log Search page also provides a side-by-side experience with the old query language enabling you to learn and ramp up on the new query language. The main reason for a rollout upgrade vs automatic upgrade is to give you time to learn and ramp up at your own pace.

2017-08-06_08h24_10

The language documentation site includes extensive language reference, tutorials, examples and cheat sheets. A full-featured demo environment, enables you try out any queries. We are also launching a community site enabling you to interact with other product users, as well as the product team, with questions regarding query language.

Summary

The upgrade enables an assortment of new capabilities and customers are already taking advantage of them. Over the last week and half, during the soft launch period, hundreds of customers elected to upgrade their workspace, totaling in more than 1,000 enhanced workspaces. Upgrade your workspace today and start using the new powerful search and query language to gain deep insights into your data! Register now to join us for a webinar on August 17, 2017, where we will share more details and demos of this improved experience.
