Clumio extends support to AWS EBS with $135M funding bump

Clumio plans to use its $135M Series C funding to expand its data protection scope.

The backup-as-a-service startup came out of stealth in August with protection for VMware on premises, VMware Cloud on AWS and native AWS services. Clumio this week disclosed its latest funding round. Clumio’s Series A and B rounds raised $11M and $40M, respectively, so the latest $135M injection marks a substantial funding boost for the company. Sutter Hill Ventures and Altimeter Capital led the new funding round.

Clumio CEO Poojan Kumar said the data protection vendor will build out its services platform eventually to cover every data source, starting with Amazon Elastic Block Store (EBS). The Amazon EBS support was rolled out in beta this week, and Clumio is working on support for Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud Platform.

Clumio’s Amazon EBS support is expected to become generally available before the end of 2019.

Clumio’s mission statement is to do with backup what Salesforce has done with customer relationship management (CRM) by delivering backup as a service entirely through the cloud. All processes involved with backup such as deduplication, access management, encryption, backup scheduling and resource allotment would be handled through the service.

Kumar said as customers’ infrastructures expand beyond their data centers, keeping their data protected has grown more complicated. Clumio is targeting customers who don’t want to devote IT resources to keeping up with that complexity.

“Customers are saying, ‘I want to stop the business of doing this myself,'” Kumar said.

Kumar said this is especially true with cloud-native data. He said customers have told him that data generated from a cloud application shouldn’t then be replicated to a data center in order to back it up. He said most customers want to lower or remove their data center footprint.

Investor interest in backup

This has been a banner year for funding for backup vendors, with four vendors alone pulling in more than $1 billion. Veeam received $500 million and Rubrik pulled in $261M in January, and Druva rose $130M in June.  

Christophe Bertrand, senior analyst at IT analysis firm Enterprise Strategy Group, said Clumio nearly tripled its previous funding, although it competes in a crowded backup market, because of its “born-in-the-cloud-ness.” Cloud-native service offerings, subscription pricing and the lack of on-premises investment are all seen as the direction of where backup is currently headed, so investors are buying in now.

“Investors are looking at this as where the market is going,” Bertrand said. “Winning Best of Show at VMworld probably helped, too.”

Bertrand was quick to note that Clumio faces a tough competitive field, however.  Druva and Carbonite — now  part of OpenText — have provided cloud-based backup for years, and long-time backup vendor Commvault added its Metallic SaaS backup service in October. Most of the other large backup vendors can also protect data in the cloud.

Bertrand expects Clumio to invest in extending its geographical reach and bolstering its partner ecosystem. As for product development, he expects Clumio to support more applications, hypervisors besides VMware vSphere and even use cases beyond backup.

Kumar said the Clumio roadmap calls for adding features such as security, container support, customer access keys and bandwidth throttling. He said Clumio will also develop support for new workloads, expand its channel strategy and add to its engineering team.

“They have to do these things quickly to gain traction,” Bertrand said. “It’s going to become a very contested space.”

Kubernetes security opens a new frontier: multi-tenancy

SAN DIEGO — As enterprises expand production container deployments, a new Kubernetes security challenge has emerged: multi-tenancy.

Among the many challenges with multi-tenancy in general is that it is not easy to define, and few IT pros agree on a single definition or architectural approach. Broadly speaking, however, multi-tenancy occurs when multiple projects, teams or tenants, share a centralized IT infrastructure, but remain logically isolated from one another.

Kubernetes multi-tenancy also adds multilayered complexity to an already complex Kubernetes security picture, and demands that IT pros wire together a stack of third-party and, at times, homegrown tools on top of the core Kubernetes framework.

This is because core upstream Kubernetes security features are limited to service accounts for operations such as role-based access control — the platform expects authentication and authorization data to come from an external source. Kubernetes namespaces also don’t offer especially granular or layered isolation by default. Typically, each namespace corresponds to one tenant, whether that tenant is defined as an application, a project or a service.

“To build logical isolation, you have to add a bunch of components on top of Kubernetes,” said Karl Isenberg, tech lead manager at Cruise Automation, a self-driving car service in San Francisco, in a presentation about Kubernetes multi-tenancy here at KubeCon + CloudNativeCon North America 2019 this week. “Once you have Kubernetes, Kubernetes alone is not enough.”

However, Isenberg and other presenters here said Kubernetes multi-tenancy can have significant advantages if done right. Cruise, for example, runs very large Kubernetes clusters, with up to 1,000 nodes, shared by thousands of employees, teams, projects and some customers. Kubernetes multi-tenancy means more highly efficient clusters and cost savings on data center hardware and cloud infrastructure.

“Lower operational costs is another [advantage] — if you’re starting up a platform operations team with five people, you may not be able to manage five [separate] clusters,” Isenberg added. “We [also] wanted to make our investments in focused areas, so that they applied to as many tenants as possible.”

Multi-tenant Kubernetes security an ad hoc practice for now

The good news for enterprises that want to achieve Kubernetes multi-tenancy securely is that there are a plethora of third-party tools they can use to do it, some of which are sold by vendors, and others open sourced by firms with Kubernetes development experience, including Cruise and Yahoo Media.

Duke Energy Corporation, for example, has a 60-node Kubernetes cluster in production that’s stretched across three on-premises data centers and shared by 100 web applications so far. The platform is comprised of several vendors’ products, from Diamanti hyper-converged infrastructure to Aqua Security Software’s container firewall, which logically isolates tenants from one another at a granular level that accounts for the ephemeral nature of container infrastructure.

“We don’t want production to talk to anyone [outside of it],” said Ritu Sharma, senior IT architect at the energy holding company in Charlotte, N.C., in a presentation at KubeSec Enterprise Summit, an event co-located with KubeCon this week. “That was the first question that came to mind — how to manage cybersecurity when containers can connect service-to-service within a cluster.”

Some Kubernetes multi-tenancy early adopters also lean on cloud service providers such as Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE) to take on parts of the Kubernetes security burden. GKE can encrypt secrets in the etcd data store, which became available in Kubernetes 1.13, but isn’t enabled by default, according to a KubeSec presentation by Mike Ruth, one of Cruise’s staff security engineers.

Google also offers Workload Identity, which matches up GCP identity and access management with Kubernetes service accounts so that users don’t have to manage Kubernetes secrets or Google Cloud IAM service account keys themselves. Kubernetes SIG-Auth looks to modernize how Kubernetes security tokens are handled by default upstream to smooth Kubernetes secrets management across all clouds, but has run into snags with the migration process.

In the meantime, Verizon’s Yahoo Media has donated a project called Athenz to open source, which handles multiple aspects of authentication and authorization in its on-premises Kubernetes environments, including automatic secrets rotation, expiration and limited-audience policies for intracluster communication similar to those offered by GKE’s Workload Identity. Cruise also created a similar open source tool called RBACSync, along with Daytona, a tool that fetches secrets from HashiCorp Vault, which Cruise uses to store secrets instead of in etcd, and injects them into running applications, and k-rail for workload policy enforcement.

Kubernetes Multi-Tenancy Working Group explores standards

While early adopters have plowed ahead with an amalgamation of third-party and homegrown tools, some users in highly regulated environments look to upstream Kubernetes projects to flesh out more standardized Kubernetes multi-tenancy options.

For example, investment banking company HSBC can use Google’s Anthos Config Management (ACM) to create hierarchical, or nested, namespaces, which make for more highly granular access control mechanisms in a multi-tenant environment, and simplifies their management by automatically propagating shared policies between them. However, the company is following the work of a Kubernetes Multi-Tenancy Working Group established in early 2018 in the hopes it will introduce free open source utilities compatible with multiple public clouds.

“If I want to use ACM in AWS, the Anthos license isn’t cheap,” said Scott Surovich, global container engineering lead at HSBC, in an interview after a presentation here. Anthos also requires VMware server virtualization, and hierarchical namespaces available at the Kubernetes layer could offer Kubernetes multi-tenancy on bare metal, reducing the layers of abstraction and potentially improving performance for HSBC.

Homegrown tools for multi-tenant Kubernetes security won’t fly in HSBC’s highly regulated environment, either, Surovich said.

“I need to prove I have escalation options for support,” he said. “Saying, ‘I wrote that’ isn’t acceptable.”

So far, the working group has two incubation projects that create custom resource definitions — essentially, plugins — that support hierarchical namespaces and virtual clusters that create self-service Kubernetes API Servers for each tenant. The working group has also created working definitions of the types of multi-tenancy and begun to define a set of reference architectures.

The working group is also considering certification of multi-tenant Kubernetes security and management tools, as well as benchmark testing and evaluation of such tools, said Sanjeev Rampal, a Cisco principal engineer and co-chair of the group.

AWS Summit widens net with services for containers, devs

NEW YORK — AWS pledges to maintain its torrid pace of product and services innovations and continue to expand the breadth of both to meet customer needs.

“You decide how to build software, not us,” said Werner Vogels, Amazon vice president and CTO, in a keynote at the AWS Summit NYC event. “So, we need to give you a really big toolbox so you can get the tools you need.”

But AWS, which holds a healthy lead over Microsoft and Google in the cloud market, also wants to serve as an automation engine for customers, Vogels added.

“I strongly believe that in the future … you will only write business logic,” he said. “Focus on building your application, drop it somewhere and we will make it secure and highly available for you.”

Parade of new AWS services continues

Vogels sprinkled a series of news announcements throughout his keynote, two of which centered on containers. First, Amazon CloudWatch Container Insights, a service that provides container-level monitoring, is now in preview for monitoring clusters in Amazon Elastic Container Service and Amazon Fargate, in addition to Amazon EKS and Kubernetes. In addition, AWS for Fluent Bit, which serves as a centralized environment for container logging, is now generally available, he said.

Serverless compute also got some attention with the release of Amazon EventBridge, a serverless event bus to take in and process data across AWS’ own services and SaaS applications. AWS customers currently do this with a lot of custom code, so “the goal for us was to provide a much simpler programming model,” Vogels said. Initial SaaS partners for EventBridge include Zendesk, OneLogin and Symantec.

AWS minds the past, with eye on the future

Most customers are moving away from the concept of a monolithic application, “but there are still lots of monoliths out there,” such as SAP ERP implementations that won’t go away anytime soon, Vogels said.

But IT shops with a cloud-first mindset focus on newer architectural patterns, such as microservices. AWS wants to serve both types of applications with a full range of instance types, containers and serverless functionality, Vogels said.

He cited customers such as McDonald’s, which has built a home-delivery system with Amazon Elastic Container Service. It can take up to 20,000 orders per second and is integrated with partners such as Uber Eats, Vogels said.

Vogels ceded the stage for a time to Steve Randich, executive vice president and CIO of the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA), a nonprofit group that seeks to keep brokerage firms fair and honest.

FINRA moved wholesale to AWS and its systems now ingest up to 155 billion market events in a single day — double what it was three years ago. “When we hit these peaks, we don’t even know them operationally because the infrastructure is so elastic,” Randich said.

FINRA has designed the AWS-hosted apps to run across multiple availability zones. “Essentially, our disaster recovery is tested daily in this regard,” he said.

AWS’ ode to developers

Developers have long been a crucial component of AWS’ customer base, and the company has built out a string of tool sets aimed to meet a broad set of languages and integrated development environments (IDEs). These include AWS Cloud9, IntelliJ, Python, Visual Studio and Visual Studio Code.

VS Code is Microsoft’s lighter-weight, browser-based IDE, which has seen strong initial uptake. All the different languages in VS Code are now generally available, Vogels said to audience applause.

Additionally, AWS Cloud Development Kit (CDK) is now generally available with support for TypeScript and Python. AWS CDK makes it easier for developers to use high-level construct to define cloud infrastructure in code, said Martin Beeby, AWS principal developer evangelist, in a demo.

AWS seeks to keep the cloud secure

Vogels also used part of his AWS Summit talk to reiterate AWS’ views on security, as he did at the recent AWS re:Inforce conference dedicated to cloud security.

“There is no line in the sand that says, ‘This is good-enough security,'” he said, citing newer techniques such as automated reasoning as key advancements.

Classic security precautions have become practically obsolete, he added. “If firewalls were the way to protect our systems, then we’d still have moats [around buildings],” Vogels said. Most attack patterns AWS sees are not brute-force front-door efforts, but rather spear-phishing and other techniques: “There’s always an idiot that clicks that link,” he said.

The full spectrum of IT, from operations to engineering to compliance, must be mindful of security, Vogels said. This is true within DevOps practices such as CI/CD from both an external and internal level, he said. The first involves matters such as identity access management and hardened servers, while the latter brings in techniques including artifact validation and static code analysis.

AWS Summit draws veteran customers and newcomers

The event at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center drew thousands of attendees with a wide range of cloud experience, from FINRA to fledgling startups.

“The analytics are very interesting to me, and how I can translate that into a set of services for the clients I’m starting to work with,” said Donald O’Toole, owner of CeltTools LLC, a two-person startup based in Brooklyn. He retired from IBM in 2018 after 35 years.

AWS customer Timehop offers a mobile application oriented around “digital nostalgia,” which pulls together users’ photographs from various sources such as Facebook and Google Photos, said CTO Dmitry Traytel.

A few years ago, Timehop found itself in a place familiar to many startups: Low on venture capital and with no viable monetization strategy. The company created its own advertising server on top of AWS, dubbed Nimbus, rather than rely on third-party products. Once a user session starts, the system conducts an auction for multiple prominent mobile ad networks, which results in the best possible price for its ad inventory.

“Nimbus let us pivot to a different category,” Traytel said.

Confluent Platform 5.0 aims to mainstream Kafka streaming

The Confluent Platform continues to expand on capabilities useful for Kafka-based data streaming, with additions that are part of a 5.0 release now available from Confluent Inc.

The creation of former LinkedIn data engineers who helped build the Kafka messaging framework, Confluent Platform’s goal is to make real-time big data analytics accessible to a wider community.

Part of that effort takes the form of KSQL, which is meant to bring easier SQL-style queries to analytics on Kafka data. KSQL is a Kafka-savvy SQL query engine and language Confluent created in 2017 to open Kafka streaming data to analytics.

Version 5.0 of the Confluent Platform, commercially released on July 31, seeks to improve disaster recovery with more adept handling of application client failover to enhance IoT abilities with MQTT proxy support, and to reduce the need to use Java for programming streaming analytics with a new GUI for writing KSQL code.

Data dips into mainstream

Confluent Platform 5.0’s support for disaster recovery and other improvements is useful, said Doug Henschen, a principal analyst at Constellation Research. But the bigger value in the release, he said, is in KSQL’s potential for “the mainstreaming of streaming analytics.”

Besides the new GUI, this Confluent release upgrades the KSQL engine with support for user-defined functions, which are essential parts of many existing SQL workloads. Also, the release supports handling nested data in popular Avro and JSON formats.

“With these moves Confluent is meeting developer expectations and delivering sought-after capabilities in the context of next-generation streaming applications,” Henschen said.

That’s important because web, cloud and IoT applications are creating data at a prodigious rate, and companies are looking to analyze that data as part of real-time operations. The programming skills required to do that level of development remain rare, but, as big data ecosystem software like Apache Spark and Kafka find wider use, simpler libraries and interfaces are appearing to link data streaming and analytics more easily.

Kafka, take a log

At its base, Kafka is a log-oriented publish-and-subscribe messaging system created to handle the data created by burgeoning web and cloud activity at social media giant LinkedIn.

The core software has been open sourced as Apache Kafka. Key Kafka messaging framework originators, including Jay Krebs, Neha Narkhede and others, left LinkedIn in 2014 to found Confluent, with the stated intent to build on core Kafka messaging for further enterprise purposes.

Joanna Schloss, Confluent’s director of product marketing, said Confluent Platform’s support for nested data in Avro and JSON will enable greater use of business intelligence (BI) tools in Kafka data streaming. In addition, KSQL now support more complex joins, allowing KSQL applications to enhance data in more varied ways.

She said opening KSQL activity to view via a GUI makes KSQL a full citizen in modern development teams in which programmers, as well as DevOps and operations staff, all take part in data streaming efforts.

“Among developers, DevOps and operations personnel there are persons interested in seeing how Kafka clusters are performing,” she said. Now, with the KSQL GUI, “when something arrives they can use SQL [skills] to watch what happened.” They don’t need to find a Java developer to interrogate the system, she noted.

Making Kafka more accessible for applications

KSQL is among the streaming analytics capabilities of interest to Stephane Maarek, CEO at DataCumulus, a Paris-based firm focused on Java, Scala and Kafka training and consulting.

Maarek said KSQL has potential to encapsulate a lot of programming complexity, and, in turn, to lower the barrier to writing streaming applications. In this, Maarek said, Confluent is helping make Kafka more accessible “to a variety of use cases and data sources.”

Moreover, because the open source community that supports Kafka “is strong, the real-time applications are really easy to create and operate,” Maarek added.

Advances in the replication capabilities in Confluent Platform are “a leap forward for disaster recovery, which has to date been something of a pain point,” he said.

Maarek also said he welcomed recent updates to Confluent Control Center, because they give developers and administrators more insights into the activity of Kafka cluster components, particularly schema registry and application consumption lags — the difference between messaging reads and messaging writes. The updates also reduce the need for administrators to write commands, according to Maarek.

Data streaming field

The data streaming field remains young, and Confluent faces competition from established data analytics players like IBM, Teradata and SAS Institute, Hadoop distribution vendors like Cloudera, Hortonworks and MapR, and a variety of specialists such as MemSQL, SQLstream and Striim.

“There’s huge interest in streaming applications and near-real-time analytics, but it’s a green space,” Henschen said. “There are lots of ways to do it and lots of vendor camps — database, messaging-streaming platforms, next-gen data platforms and so on — all vying for a piece of the action.”

However, Kafka often is a common ingredient, Henschen noted. Such ubiquity helps put Confluent in a position “to extend the open source core with broader capabilities in a commercial offering,” he said.

REDMOND, Wash. — Aug. 1, 2018 — On Wednesday, Microsoft Corp. announced it selected Numbers4Health as a winner of its third annual Airband Grant Fund to help bring telehealth solutions to rural communities. As one of the eight winners, Numbers4Health is deploying a solution in partnership with internet service providers to help support telemedicine and improve healthcare outcomes in rural Maine. The Airband Grant Fund is part of the Microsoft Airband Initiative, which aims to help close the broadband access gap in rural America by 2022.

“Numbers4Health is working to ensure the citizens of rural Maine will have broadband access to critical telehealth solutions,” said Shelley McKinley, Microsoft’s head of Technology and Corporate Responsibility. “Their use of innovative technologies like TV white spaces will help improve healthcare access in Maine.”

The Microsoft Airband Grant Fund seeks to spark innovation to overcome barriers to affordable internet access, through support of high-potential, early-stage startups creating innovative new technologies, services and business models. This year’s grantees will receive cash investments, access to technology, mentoring and networking opportunities.

“The best way to manage healthcare costs and improve health outcomes is to treat injury and illness as fast as possible,” said Peg Molloy, managing director, Numbers4Health.  “Numbers4Health puts health information software and technology at schools where injured student athletes can be quickly assessed. Microsoft’s Airband Grant Fund is helping us make that happen.”

REDMOND, Wash. — Aug. 1, 2018 — On Wednesday, Microsoft Corp. announced it selected Skylark Wireless as a winner of its third annual Airband Grant Fund, to help bring broadband internet access to rural communities. As one of the eight winners, Skylark Wireless is using innovative broadband solutions to extend broadband access to 10,000 households and businesses in Mingo County, West Virginia. The Airband Grant Fund is part of the Microsoft Airband Initiative, which aims to help close the broadband access gap in rural America by 2022.

The grant will help expand CvWireless’ network, providing broadband in Essex County

REDMOND, Wash. — Aug. 1, 2018 — On Wednesday, Microsoft Corp. announced it selected CvWireless as a winner of its third annual Airband Grant Fund to help bring broadband internet access to rural communities. As one of eight winners, CV Wireless is using innovative broadband solutions to connect 300 households in Essex County, New York, including the towns of Whallonsburg, Willsboro and Reber. The Airband Grant Fund is part of the Microsoft Airband Initiative, which aims to help close the broadband access gap in rural America by 2022.

“CV Wireless is working to ensure the citizens of Essex County have the broadband access they need to connect and compete with their more urban neighbors,” said Shelley McKinley, Microsoft’s head of Technology and Corporate Responsibility. “Their use of innovative technologies like TV white spaces will help close the broadband gap in the New York state.”

The Microsoft Airband Grant Fund seeks to spark innovation to overcome barriers to affordable internet access, through support of high-potential, early-stage startups creating innovative new technologies, services and business models. This year’s grantees receive cash investments, access to technology, mentoring and networking opportunities.

Microsoft awards grant to Numbers4Health to expand its telehealth solution to rural Texas – Stories

As one of the eight winners, Numbers4Health is deploying a solution in partnership with internet service providers using TV white spaces technologies to help support telemedicine and improve healthcare outcomes in rural Texas. The Airband Grant Fund is part of the Microsoft Airband Initiative, which aims to help close the broadband access gap in rural America by 2022.

“Numbers4Health is working to ensure the citizens of rural Texas will have broadband access to critical telehealth solutions,” said Shelley McKinley, Microsoft’s head of Technology and Corporate Responsibility. “Their use of innovative technologies like TV white spaces will help improve healthcare access in Texas.”

Red Hat and Microsoft co-develop the first Red Hat OpenShift jointly managed service on a public cloud

Microsoft and Red Hat expand partnership around hybrid cloud, container management and developer productivity

SAN FRANCISCO — May 8, 2018 — Microsoft Corp. (Nasdaq “MSFT”) and Red Hat Inc. (NYSE: RHT) on Tuesday expanded their alliance to empower enterprise developers to run container-based applications across Microsoft Azure and on-premises. With this collaboration, the companies will introduce the first jointly managed OpenShift offering in the public cloud, combining the power of Red Hat OpenShift, the industry’s most comprehensive enterprise Kubernetes platform, and Azure, Microsoft’s public cloud.

“Gartner predicts that, by 2020, more than 50% of global organizations will be running containerized applications in production, up from less than 20% today.”1

With organizations turning to containerized applications and Kubernetes to drive digital transformation and help address customer, competitive and market demands, they need solutions to easily orchestrate and manage these applications, across the public cloud and on-premises. Red Hat OpenShift on Azure will be jointly engineered and designed to reduce the complexity of container management for customers. As the companies’ preferred offering for hybrid container workflows for our joint customers, Red Hat and Microsoft will jointly manage the solution for customers, with support from both companies.

In addition to being a fully managed service, Red Hat OpenShift on Azure will bring enterprise developers:

  • Flexibility: Freely move applications between on-premises environments and Azure using OpenShift, which offers a consistent container platform across the hybrid cloud.
  • Speed: Connect faster, and with enhanced security, between Azure and on-premises OpenShift clusters with hybrid networking.
  • Productivity: Access Azure services like Azure Cosmos DB, Azure Machine Learning and Azure SQL DB, making developers more productive.

When customers choose Red Hat OpenShift on Azure, they will receive a managed service backed by operations and support services from both companies. Support extends across their containerized applications, operating systems, infrastructure and the orchestrator. Further, Red Hat’s and Microsoft’s sales organizations will work together to bring the companies’ extensive technology platforms to customers, equipping them to build more cloud-native applications and modernize existing applications.

Customers can more easily move their applications between on-premises environments and Microsoft Azure because they are leveraging a consistent container platform in OpenShift across both footprints of the hybrid cloud.

The expanded collaboration between Microsoft and Red Hat will also include:

  • Enabling the hybrid cloud with full support for Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform on-premises and on Microsoft Azure Stack, enabling a consistent on- and off-premises foundation for the development, deployment and management of cloud-native applications on Microsoft infrastructure. This provides a pathway for customers to pair the power of the Azure public cloud with the flexibility and control of OpenShift on-premises on Azure Stack.
  • Multiarchitecture container management that spans both Windows Server and Red Hat Enterprise Linux containers. Red Hat OpenShift on Microsoft Azure will consistently support Windows containers alongside Red Hat Enterprise Linux containers, offering a uniform orchestration platform that spans the leading enterprise platform providers.
  • More ways to harness data with expanded integration of Microsoft SQL Server across the Red Hat OpenShift landscape. This will soon include SQL Server as a Red Hat certified container for deployment on Red Hat OpenShift on Azure and Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform across the hybrid cloud, including Azure Stack.
  • More ways for developers to use Microsoft tools with Red Hat as Visual Studio Enterprise and Visual Studio Professional subscribers will get Red Hat Enterprise Linux credits. For the first time, developers can work with .NET, Java, or the most popular open source frameworks on this single, and supported, platform.

Red Hat OpenShift on Azure is anticipated to be available in preview in the coming months. Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform and Red Hat Enterprise Linux on Azure and Azure Stack are currently available.

Declaration Networks Group and Microsoft announce agreement to deliver broadband internet to rural communities in Virginia and Maryland

The project will expand Declaration Networks’ broadband network, providing access to currently unconnected people, using TV White Spaces and other technologies

REDMOND, Wash. — April 24, 2018 — On Tuesday, Declaration Networks Group Inc. (DNG) and Microsoft Corp. announced a new agreement to deliver broadband internet access to approximately 65,000 people on the Eastern Shore of Virginia, including Accomack and Northampton Counties, and Garrett County, Maryland, over the next three years. This partnership is part of Microsoft’s Rural Airband Initiative.

There are 19.4 million people living in rural America without broadband access, including nearly 30 percent of the people in rural Virginia and 6 percent of the people in rural Maryland. Under its NeuBeam™ brand, DNG delivers high-speed internet and voice services using a combination of advanced wireless technologies, including TV White Spaces. Microsoft and DNG aim to address the rural broadband gap for residents and businesses, allowing unserved regions to fully participate in the digital economy through access to technology and services that will enable farmers, healthcare professionals, educators, business leaders and others in the community.
