Undocumented Word feature could lead to system information theft

Researchers have found an undocumented Microsoft Word feature that can be abused by attackers in order to obtain the system information of a victim.

The undocumented Word feature was detailed by Alexander Liskin, heuristic detection group manager, Anton Ivanov, senior malware analyst, and Andrey Kryukov, security researcher at Kaspersky Lab. A hidden feature known only as was discovered by the Kaspersky team in malicious attachments contained in suspected phishing emails. The field contained links formatted in Unicode rather than the intended ASCII format, which are ignored by Word and are used by the attackers to send GET requests to malicious domains.

According to the researchers, targeted attacks using the undocumented Word feature can be very hard to detect because malicious documents “contained no macros, exploits or any other active content.”

“A close inspection revealed that [the malicious documents] contained several links to PHP scripts located on third-party web resources. When we attempted to open these files in Microsoft Word, we found that the application addressed one of the links. As a result, the attackers received information about the software installed on the computer,” the Kaspersky researchers wrote in their analysis. “This code effectively sent information about the software installed on the victim machine to the attackers, including info about which version of Microsoft Office was installed.”

The researchers noted that the undocumented Word feature was present in versions of Office for Windows, iOS and Android, but said other productivity suites like LibreOffice and OpenOffice did not call the malicious links. The research team also noted there is no official documentation for the field.

Avihai Ben-Yosef, CTO of Cymulate, said the system information theft could likely be just the first stage of an attack.

“[Knowing the] version of Office will allow hackers to identify whether or not the client that opened the Word document is vulnerable to known exploits that could be used to hack them. Imagine that hackers are building a database by simply sending thousands of emails to users and collecting information about those that opened the document,” Ben-Yosef told SearchSecurity. “Hackers will know if their Office version is vulnerable to a specific exploit and will be able to trigger an attack when they feel like it.”

Intelligence is king in cyberattacks as well as cyberdefense.
Marina Kidronhead of the Skybox Security Research Lab

Marina Kidron, head of the Skybox Security Research Lab, said spear phishing campaigns, like the ones abusing this undocumented Word feature, may not always present an imminent threat to an organization, this type of system information theft “could make or break a targeted attack.

“Intelligence is king in cyberattacks as well as cyberdefense. Targeted attacks are traditionally more complex than distributed attacks, such as ransomware, because they have — and need — more context on the environment they’re working in. With more context, attacks can be crafted to have better chances of evading detection,” Kidron told SearchSecurity. “This can render signature-based intrusion detection systems ineffective and raises the importance of good cyberhygiene stalwarts like network segmentation and vulnerability management. If an attack slips through the intrusion detection system, you need to be sure vulnerabilities with active or available exploits have been mitigated, access is limited and controls are in place to prevent the spread of the attack.”

Wanted – All in one PC

I have a Dell Optiplex 9030: OptiPlex 9030 All-in-One Desktop with Optional Touch Screen | Dell UK I was planning on listing for sale shortly.

23″ 1080p screen, Intel Core i5 4590S (quad core 3Ghz), 8GB ram, 500GB hard drive, Windows 10 Pro (free upgrade from Win 8 Pro). Looking at The Sims 4 system requirements, it should run. Would be AIO only (no keyboard/mouse). A neat feature is that it has an HDMI In port, so you can flick between the PC and another device you plug in if you want.

I’m based in London but I will be in Manchester on Saturday 30th, so could potentially deliver.

If you’d be interested let me know and I can take some actual photos.

For Sale – Dell Precision M6600 Mobile Workstation (17″ screen, AMD FirePro graphics)

Hi everyone

I have for sale my Dell Precision M6600 Mobile Workstation. This is a very large and heavy laptop, with a PSU to match, with a 17″ screen and AMD FirePro graphics (certified drivers for CAD work etc.). When I first moved to London, this was my daily machine but basically sat in my room and never moved; in my new flat I switched fully to an AIO desktop so for the last year or so it’s been sat in a drawer so I figured it was time to move it on.

Will come in the original Dell box, with various bits of Dell paperwork, and a Dell Windows 7 Pro SP1 disk. There is no warranty left.

For a laptop of this size and power, battery life was never its strong point. I was however conscious that it sat on my desk plugged in, and thus I did occasionally power cycle it (drain the battery then plug it back in to recharge) to try and keep everything in the best condition – hence the 13 cycles or so. Windows suggests it’ll manage 1.5-2.5 hours, but this varies wildly depending on what you are doing; but clearly more than enough to move it around your house, office etc. without having to shut down and restart.

The Dell Diagnostics pass (see photo). Despite passing the tests, the only issue I’m aware of is that the DVDRW drive is “tempermental” – it doesn’t always recognise disks and seems to be slow in reading them if it does pick them up. I’m not sure if that’s loose cable or a faulty drive – I can’t remember the last time I used a disk, and only noticed it today when I went to factory reset the machine and had to switch to a USB stick instead of using the Dell Windows 7 DVD.

I installed a clean copy of Windows 7 Pro onto the msata SSD this morning and added all of the drivers needed – these are all on the laptop hard drive and numbered in the order I installed so you can keep them for future reference if you want to wipe & reinstall or go back to Windows 7. I have upgraded it to Windows 10 Pro – everything works, but two things to note: a) graphics are currently picked up as an AMD Radeon 6900M and b) device manager shows a missing driver. When I was using the laptop myself, I resolved ‘A’ by grabbing the correct drivers from AMD directly rather than Windows update, for ‘B’ I think this is for the hard drive fall sensor and I remember I eventually found a driver that worked; but don’t have a copy to include (sorry!). I’ve not done anything about these as I wanted to leave it ‘clean’ for the new owner, and also conscious you may want to wipe to change the setup / return to Windows 7 etc.

Otherwise, I think the machine is in pretty good condition, but it is a few years old – so there are the usual scuffs etc. on the machine, in particular a couple of marks on the two front corners (see photos). I have looked at the screen and can’t see any obvious bright or dark pixels, however, that’s no guarantee there aren’t any there. The screen hinge is in good condition and still quite stiff, so it’ll sit in the position you want without any problems. The touchpad shows almost no signs of use – I used a mouse nearly all of the time I’ve had the laptop.

This is a very heavy machine and PSU, so will cost a small fortune to post. I would therefore prefer to exchange in person which would also give you an opportunity to look it over and check you are happy with it. I split my time between London (Croydon & Euston/Kings Cross) and Devon (Newton Abbot) and thus happy for you to collect; and I’m also happy to drive most places in London/South East and deliver in-person for any serious buyers.

Price and currency: £350

Payment method: Bank transfer / cash on collection
