Microsoft scoops up NAS vendor Avere for hybrid cloud services

Microsoft moved to bolster its cloud storage capabilities with the acquisition of NAS vendor Avere Systems, giving it a high-performance file system to manage unstructured data in hybrid clouds.

The Pittsburgh-based NAS vendor Avere’s OS file system is incorporated in FXT Edge filers in all-flash or spinning disk versions for on-premises or hybrid cloud configurations. Avere also provides a virtual appliance, the Virtual FXT Edge filers, which are available for Amazon Web Services (AWS) and the Google Cloud Platform.

The terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Microsoft disclosed the acquisition in a blog post on its website but declined an interview request to provide more details about its plans for the cloud NAS vendor. Microsoft acquired early cloud NAS vendor StorSimple in 2012, and gives that technology to Azure subscribers to tier data into the cloud.

However, Avere CEO Ron Bianchini wrote in a company blog post that the two companies’ “shared vision” is to use Avere technology “in the data center, in the cloud and in hybrid cloud storage …” while tightly integrating it with Azure.

“Avere and Microsoft recognize that there are many ways for enterprises to leverage data center resources and the cloud,” Bianchini wrote. “Our shared vision is to continue our focus on all of Avere’s use cases — in the data center, in the cloud and in hybrid cloud storage and cloud bursting environments. Tighter integration with Azure will result in a much more seamless experience for our customers.”

Avere was founded in 2008 as a company that focused on the data center with its FXT Core Filers that used flash to accelerate network-attached storage (NAS) performance on disk systems. The company later transitioned to the cloud with its Avere FXT Edge Filers that served as NAS public clouds, allowing customers to connect on-premises storage to AWS, Google Cloud and Azure services.

In addition to NFS and SMB protocols, the Avere Cloud NAS appliance supports object storage from IBM Cleversafe, Western Digital, SwiftStack and others through its C2N Cloud-Core NAS platform.

The only other vendor that offers end-to-end is Oracle. But Oracle does not have a global namespace. Avere has a global namespace.
Marc Staimerfounder, Dragon Slayer Consulting

The NAS vendor also sells FlashCloud, which runs on FXT Edge Filers with object APIs to connect to public and private clouds. The systems can be clustered so that cloud-based NAS can scale on premises while also providing high-availability access to data in the cloud. Customers can use FlashCloud software as a file system for object storage and move data to the cloud without requiring a gateway.

“They provide a true NAS filer,” said Marc Staimer, founder of Dragon Slayer Consulting. “They provide a complete, end-to-end package. The only other vendor that offers end-to-end is Oracle. But Oracle does not have a global namespace. Avere has a global namespace.”

Avere founders Bianchini, CTO Michael Kazar and technical director Daniel Nydick came from NetApp, which acquired their previous company Spinnaker Networks in 2004 for its clustered NAS technology.

Some of Avere’s customers include Sony Pictures’ Imageworks, animation studio Illumination Mac Guff, the Library of Congress, Johns Hopkins University and Teradyne Inc. The company is private so it does not disclose revenue, but a source close to the vendor put its bookings at $7 million in the fourth quarter of 2016 and $22 million for the year. Those bookings were up from $4.8 million in the fourth quarter and $14.5 million in 2015.

In March of 2017, Google became an Avere investor during the company’s $14 million Series E funding round. Avere raised about $100 million in total funding. Previous investors include Menlo Ventures, Norwest Venture Partners, Lightspeed Venture Partners, Tenaya Capital and Western Digital Technologies.

The Avere team will continue to work out of its Pittsburgh office for Microsoft.

North Korea’s Lazarus Group sets sights on cryptocurrency

The North Korean state-sponsored hacking outfit known as Lazarus Group has moved beyond ransomware attacks and shifted its focus to cryptocurrency.

Lazarus Group stands accused of perpetrating the widespread WannaCry ransomware attacks earlier this year. Several private companies and governments, including the U.S., have attributed the attacks to the North Korean hacker group. Now, researchers from cybersecurity vendors Proofpoint, Inc., and RiskIQ say Lazarus Group has initiated attacks on cryptocurrency exchanges and owners in at least two different countries.

“Earlier this year, the activities of the Lazarus group in South Korea were discussed and analyzed, as they managed to compromise accounts on various South Korean cryptocurrency exchanges,” wrote Yonathan Klijnsma, threat researcher at RiskIQ, in a blog post. “More recently, they were seen targeting a United Kingdom-based cryptocurrency exchange.”

Several cryptocurrency exchanges have been hit by cyberattacks in recent weeks including South Korean exchange Youbit, which declared bankruptcy after it lost 17% of its assets in a breach last week. While the Youbit attack hasn’t been attributed to the Lazarus Group or other North Korean nation-state hackers, others incidents, including a massive spearphishing campaign targeting a UK-based cryptocurrency business, have been connected to the group.

“The Lazarus Group has increasingly focused on financially motivated attacks and appears to be capitalizing on both the increasing interest and skyrocketing prices for cryptocurrencies,” wrote Darien Huss, senior security researcher at Proofpoint, in the company’s report.

While Proofpoint and RiskIQ don’t name the organizations victimized by the Lazarus Group, researchers from the two vendors outlined the group’s new techniques for stealing cryptocurrency from both exchanges and owners. Proofpoint, for example, described several “multistage attacks” that lure victims into downloading malware, including a backdoored version of PyInstaller, a free application that bundles Python programs into a single executable package, and PowerShell malware known as “PowerRatankba” used for reconnaissance. After the initial infections are completed, Huss said, the attackers hit victims with a second wave of malware that harvests credentials for both individual cryptocurrency wallets and exchange accounts.

RiskIQ, meanwhile, identified a large phishing campaign that claimed to be bitcoin wallet software and featured links that impersonated the domain of Bitcoin Gold. According to RiskIQ researchers, Lazarus Group hackers abused internalized domain name registration to trick victims into believing the malicious site was genuine. In addition, Proofpoint’s report highlights a new type of point-of-sale (POS) malware, dubbed “RatankbaPOS,” that targets the POS framework of KSNET, a major South Korean payment provider.

Huss warned the Lazarus Group has a financially-motivated arm that has branched out beyond typical nation-state activity and is targeting individuals the same way that organized cybercrime outfits have.

“This group now appears to be targeting individuals rather than just organizations: individuals are softer targets,” Hess wrote, “often lacking resources and knowledge to defend themselves and providing new avenues of monetization for a state-sponsored threat actor’s toolkit.”

Druva Cloud Platform expands with Apollo

Druva moved to help manage data protection in the cloud with its latest Apollo software as a service, which helps protect workloads in Amazon Web Services through the Druva Cloud Platform.

The company’s new service provides a single control plane to manage infrastructure-as-a-service and platform-as-a-service cloud workloads.

Druva, based in Sunnyvale, Calif., sells two cloud backup products, Druva InSync and Druva Phoenix, for its Druva Cloud Platform. The enterprise-level Druva InSync backs up endpoint data across physical and public cloud storage. The Druva Phoenix agent backs up and restores data sets in the cloud for distributed physical and virtual servers. Phoenix applies global deduplication at the source and points archived server backups to the cloud target.

There is a big change going on throughout the industry in how data is being managed. The growth is shifting toward secondary data.

Apollo enables data management of Druva Cloud Platform workloads under a single control plane so administrators can do snapshot management for backup, recovery and replication of Amazon Web Services instances. It automates service-level agreements with global orchestration that includes file-level recovery. It also protects Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud instances.

Druva Apollo is part of an industrywide trend among data protection vendors to bring all secondary data under global management across on-premises and cloud storage.

“There is a big change going on throughout the industry in how data is being managed,” said Steven Hill, senior storage analyst for 451 Research. “The growth is shifting toward secondary data. Now, secondary data is growing faster than structured data, and that is where companies are running into a challenge.”

“Apollo will apply snapshot policies,” said Dave Packer, Druva’s vice president of product and alliance marketing. “It will automate many of the lifecycles of the snapshots. That is the first feature of Apollo.”

Automation for discovery, analysis and information governance is on the Druva cloud roadmap, Packer said.

Druva last August pulled in $80 million in funding, bringing total investments into the range of $200 million for the fast-growing vendor. Druva claims to have more than 4,000 worldwide customers that include NASA, Pfizer, NBCUniversal, Marriott Hotels, Stanford University and Lockheed Martin.

Druva has positioned its data management software to go up against traditional backup vendors Commvault and Veritas Technologies, which also are transitioning into broad-based data management players. It’s also competing with startups Rubrik, which has raised a total of $292 million in funding since 2015 for cloud data management, and Cohesity, which has raised $160 million.
