UNH InterOperability Lab expands IPv6 testing amid SDN growth

The University of New Hampshire InterOperability Lab updated its IPv6 testing program to comply with new government requirements specified by the National Institute of Standards and Technology. UNH-IOL, a technology testing facility in Durham, N.H., also added support for SDN protocols in its updated program.

The testing program applies specifically to U.S. government agencies, such as NASA, that procure networking equipment and need independent certification that the products meet regulation, according to Timothy Winters, senior IP manager at UNH-IOL. The new requirements come as IPv6 adoption continues to grow globally, as indicated by Google, which said over 20% of its users now have IPv6 addresses, Winters added.

Agencies and product vendors that are UNH-IOL members send devices that need certification to the lab, where UNH students and staff test the products for a month to ensure they support IPv6 and comply.

UNH-IOL tests a range of products, including routers, switches, phones, printers and security cameras. Increasingly, however, agencies and service providers have requested UNH-IOL’s help with SDN and IoT devices, Winters said.

“We’re encountering more devices we haven’t seen,” he said. “Some of this is because of IoT, where things are actually being networked and put on a network. They’re not sitting on a proprietary link anymore.”

As operators and service providers realize IPv4 address space is decreasing, they’ve started moving to IPv6-only networks, Winters said. This transition caused UNH-IOL to update its IPv6 testing program accordingly.

“UNH-IOL is trying to push that support, so people building applications and services — or even routers and switches — can know which things work or don’t work in an IPv6-only network,” he said. These changes look at the requirements for building, installing and updating applications — processes that sometimes sound simple, but can actually be quite complicated, he added.

UNH-IOL also patched security loopholes in the IPv6 testing program and made the overall testing more generic, so governments outside the U.S. and other user groups could adopt it, Winters said.

Equipment suppliers have two years to comply with the new IPv6 testing specification. As a result, UNH-IOL will likely see 200 to 300 devices return to the lab to undergo the updated testing, according to Winters.

“I’m sure there are companies that have made some products legacy or don’t sell them anymore, so those won’t come back in,” Winters said. “But that’s a challenge: We have to get everybody back through the program.”

Additionally, he said the lab now regularly receives routers without a command-line interface to test. This change comes as more service providers and equipment providers find value in SDN — and discover how IPv6 complements SDN deployments, Winters said.

“For SDN, the ability to address multiple services is helpful when you’re trying to get into networks that are so complex they have to be programmed,” he said. Service providers, for example, can use IPv6, along with disaggregation, network slicing and segment routing. The IPv6 address helps identify to which service any particular packet is going.

Along with the other testing updates, UNH-IOL added support for SDN protocols, such as NETCONF and YANG, as well as specs for IoT capabilities. By doing so, Winters said he hopes the lab will help push IPv6 deployments. And, as another plus, UNH-IOL students tackle “the latest and greatest stuff” in networking.

“For us, the exciting part is getting students involved in learning a technology like this,” he said. “It gives students the ability to build tools, see devices and test them.”

MapR Data Platform gets object tiering and S3 support

MapR Technologies updated its Data Platform, adding support for Amazon’s S3 application programming interface and automated tiering to cloud-based object storage.

MapR is known for its distribution of open source Apache Hadoop software. It contributes to related open source projects designed to handle advanced analytics for large data sets across computer clusters. The 6.1 release of the MapR Data Platform — formerly MapR Converged Data Platform — adds storage management features for artificial intelligence applications that require real-time analytics.

MapR Data Platform 6.1, scheduled to become generally available this quarter, features policy-based data placement across performance, capacity and archive tiers. It also added fast-ingest erasure coding for high-capacity storage on premises and in public clouds, an installer option to enable security by default and volume-based encryption of data at rest.

Providing real-time analytics for AI requires coordination between on-premises, cloud and edge storage, said Jack Norris, senior vice president of data and applications at MapR, which is based in Santa Clara, Calif.

“What we’re seeing increasingly is that the time frame for AI is decreasing. It’s not enough to understand what happened in the business. It’s really, ‘How do you impact the business as it’s happening?'” Norris said.

MapR storage additions

MapR Data Platform 6.1 expands storage features by adding policy-based tiering to automatically move data. It now supports a performance tier of SSDs or SAS HDDs; a capacity tier of high-density HDDs; and an archival tier of third-party, S3-compliant object storage. Customers supply the commodity hardware.

The storage management features follow the 2017 addition of MapR-XD software to MapR Converged Data Platform. MapR-XD is based on the company’s distributed file system that was released in 2010. It includes a global namespace that can span on-premises and public cloud environments and support tiers of hot, warm and cold storage.

MapR writes all data to the performance tier and then determines the most appropriate way to store it, Norris said. Its tiering is independent of data format. Norris said the system could write NFS and read S3, or the reverse. For instance, MapR can place and store data as an object on one or more clouds and later pull back the data and restore it as a file transparently to the user.

“We do constant management of the data to account for node failure, disk failure, rebalancing of the cluster and eliminating hotspots,” he said.

New MapR release adds file stubs

The MapR software handles data transformations between file and object formats in the background. With past releases, the MapR system had to go through an intermediate step to shift data between file- and object-based storage. With 6.1, MapR retains file stubs to represent data that the system has shifted to cloud-based object storage. The stub stores the location of the data.

“When you need to access that data, we’re just pulling back an individual file,” Norris said. “You don’t want to pull back a whole directory or a whole volume. If you look at cost economics in the cloud, it’s expensive, because you get charged by data movement.”

The newly added support for the Amazon S3 API includes all core capabilities, such as the concept of buckets and access-control lists, Norris said.

MapR’s new erasure coding spreads pieces of data across disks. Norris said the MapR erasure coding preserves snapshots and compression.

The MapR Data Platform is available in Enterprise Standard and Enterprise Premium editions. The Enterprise Standard offering includes MapR-XD, MapR-Document Database, MapR Event Data Streams and Apache Hadoop, Spark and Drill. The Enterprise Premium software tacks on options such as real-time data integration with MapR Change Data Capture, Orbit Cloud Suite extensions and the ability to add the Data Science Refinery toolkit.

Deviation from Hadoop

Carl Olofson, a data management software research vice president at IDC, said MapR’s file system emulates the Hadoop Distributed File System, but its indexes and update-in-place capabilities set it apart. The challenge for MapR is the potential skepticism of having a “data lake solution that deviates so far from the Hadoop project code,” Olofson said.

“The good news there is that even the other Hadoop vendors are no longer solely focused on Hadoop, so MapR may be on top of an emerging trend,” he wrote.

Policy-based storage tiering is the key new capability in the MapR Data Platform 6.1, Olofson claimed. “As people move data lake technologies to the cloud, they are initially in sticker shock because of the storage costs associated with it,” he said. “The MapR approach not only addresses that, but they say it does it automatically.”

MapR’s competition includes Cloudera, Hortonworks and various open source technologies, according to Mike Matchett, principal IT industry analyst at Small World Big Data. He noted concerns that MapR is “at heart a closed proprietary platform.” But Matchett said he gives MapR an advantage over plain open source in terms of supporting mixed and now operational workloads.

“The theme for MapR in this release is to support big data AI and ML [machine learning] alongside and with business applications,” Matchett wrote in an email.

Avaya adds real-time speech analytics to contact centers

Avaya has updated its workforce optimization software for contact centers, adding real-time speech analytics and automated quality management tools. The vendor also released new data privacy features to help businesses comply with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

The workforce optimization upgrades are Avaya’s latest initiative to bring AI and automation to the contact center. In April, the vendor announced a partnership with the startup Afiniti for intelligent call routing.

All major contact center vendors have begun investing in workforce optimization, either through native software development or partnerships with other vendors, said Robin Gareiss, president of Nemertes Research, based in Mokena, Ill.

The upgrades Avaya highlighted this week should help contact center customers increase sales and boost customer satisfaction, but they are not revolutionary, Gareiss said. Instead, businesses can already get the same tools from legacy vendors such as Cisco and Genesys, as well as cloud startups such as Five9.

“Without these announcements, Avaya would fall behind,” Gareiss said. “And given it’s the platform for so many huge contact centers around the world, it’s crucial for Avaya to continue to improve agent evaluation through speech analytics, as well as formal customer feedback and ratings.”

Some startups in the contact center market have placed workforce optimization at the core of their offerings. The cloud vendor Sharpen Technologies Inc., for example, uses a customizable algorithm to rate agents and uses an AI platform to monitor and flag trends within the contact center.

“Workforce optimization has become a huge area of focus for customer engagement,” Gareiss said. “It’s really all about making the contact center agents more productive and efficient to provide continuously improving customer experience.”

Avaya tries to keep pace with competitors

Avaya’s real-time speech analytics software will help businesses monitor conversations between agents and customers. The system can provide helpful contextual information to agents during the call, or suggest next steps based on the customer’s tone or word choice.

The tool can also alert managers to conversations that require immediate intervention, such as if an agent fails to get the proper consents or provide the necessary compliance disclosures, at the outset of a discussion with a customer.

Avaya highlighted real-time speech analytics as one tool for monitoring GDPR compliance within a contact center. The vendor also added a feature that will let businesses securely delete recordings in response to “right to be forgotten” requests.

Meanwhile, a new quality management system can automatically evaluate agents after every customer interaction, freeing managers of a time-consuming task.

Businesses must purchase a separate license to use Avaya’s workforce optimization tools, which are sold individually and as a suite. Avaya’s contact center customers can install the software in their data centers or subscribe to it as a hosted cloud service.

Buffalo 2u Rack mountable NAS Drive (6tb)

Hi Guys,

I have for sale my old NAS as i’ve just updated to one with more space as im going to be keeping a lot of 4k content on there shortly (videography)

This current nas has served me well over the last 4 years or so. It’s only needed 2 drives replacing over this time.

Currently it has 4x 2TB drives installed. Using Raid 5 this gives 5.8TB of storage.

It’s 2u in size and is rack mountable. It is lockable however unfortunately i’ve lost the keys!

VMware introduced NSX-T 2.1 on Tuesday. Through NSX-T, Pivotal Container Service, or PKS, brings support for Kubernetes container clusters to vSphere, VMware’s virtualization platform for the data center. PCF is an open source cloud platform as a service (PaaS) that developers use to build, deploy, run and scale applications.

VMware developed the Cloud Foundry service that is the basis for PCF. Pivotal Software, whose parent company is Dell Technologies, now owns the PaaS, which Pivotal licenses under Apache 2.0.

VMware NSX-T was introduced early this year to provide networking and security management for non-vSphere application frameworks, OpenStack environments, and multiple KVM distributions.

Support for KVM underscores VMware’s recognition that the virtualization layer in Linux is a force in cloud environments. As a result, the vendor has to provide integration with vSphere for VMware to extend its technology beyond the data center.

VMware expects to use VeloCloud to take NSX into the branch and the WAN. “What VeloCloud offers is really NSX everywhere,” VMware CEO Pat Gelsinger told analysts last week, according to a transcript published by the financial site Seeking Alpha.

Gelsinger held the conference call after the company released earnings for the fiscal third quarter ended Nov. 3. VMware reported revenue of $1.98 billion, an increase of 11% over the same period last year. Net income grew to $443 million from $319 million a year ago.

Quobyte preps 2.0 Data Center File System software update

Quobyte’s updated Data Center File System software adds volume-mirroring capabilities for disaster recovery, support for Mac and Windows clients, and shared access control lists.

The startup, based in Santa Clara, Calif., this week released the 2.0 version of its distributed POSIX-compliant parallel file system to beta testers and expects to make the updated product generally available in January.

The Quobyte software supports file, block and object storage, and it’s designed to scale out IOPS, throughput and capacity linearly on commodity hardware ranging from four to thousands of servers. Policy-based data placement lets users earmark high-performance workloads to flash drives, including faster new NVMe-based PCIe solid-state drives.

Software-defined storage startups face challenges

Despite the additions, industry analysts question whether Quobyte has done enough to stand out in a crowded field of file-system vendors.

Marc Staimer, president of Dragon Slayer Consulting, said Quobyte faces significant hurdles against competition ranging from established giants, such as Dell EMC, to startups, including Elastifile, Qumulo, Rozo Systems, StorOne and WekaIO.

Staimer called features such as shared access control lists (ACLs) and volume mirroring table stakes in the software-defined storage market. He said mirroring — a technology that was hot 20 years ago — protects against hardware failures, but doesn’t go far enough for disaster recovery. He said Quobyte must consider adding versioning and time stamping to protect against software corruption, malware, accidental deletion and problems of that nature.

Steven Hill, a senior storage analyst at 451 Research, said it takes more than features to gain share in the enterprise storage market. He said Quobyte would do well to forge closer hardware partnerships to provide better integration, optimization, support and services.

“Even though software-delivered storage appears to be the trend, many storage customers still seem more interested in the fully supported hardware [and] software appliance model, rather than taking a roll-your-own approach to enterprise storage, ¬†especially when there can be so many different production requirements in play at the same time,” Hill wrote in an email.

Quobyte CEO Bjorn Kolbeck and CTO Felix Hupfeld worked in storage engineering at Google before starting Quobyte in 2013. And Kolbeck claimed the “Google-style operations” that the Quobyte architecture enables would allow users to grow the system and run 24/7 without the need for additional manpower.

According to Kolbeck, fault tolerance is the most important enabler for Google-style operations. He said Quobyte achieves fault tolerance through automated replication, erasure coding, disaster recovery and end-to-end checksums that ensure data integrity. With those capabilities, users can fix broken hardware on their own schedules, he said.

“That’s the key to managing very large installations with hundreds of petabytes with a small team,” Kolbeck said.

Kolbeck said Quobyte made volume mirroring a priority following requests from commercial customers. The software uses continuous asynchronous replication across geographic regions and clouds to facilitate disaster recovery. Kolbeck said customers would be able replicate the primary site and use erasure coding with remote sites to lower the storage footprint, if they choose.

To expand data sharing across platforms and interfaces, Quobyte 2.0 finalized native drivers for Mac and Windows clients. Its previous version supported Linux, Hadoop and Amazon Simple Storage Service (S3) options for users to read, write and access files.

Kolbeck said adding access control lists will allow users to read and modify them from all interfaces now that Mac and Windows ACLs and S3 permissions map to Quobyte’s internal NFSv4 ACLs.

Quobyte also moved to simplify installation and management through the creation of a cloud-based service to assist with domain name system service configuration. Kolbeck said the company “moved as far away from the command line as possible,” and the system now can walk customers through the installation process.

Kolbeck said Quobyte currently has about 25 customers running the software in production. He said the company targets commercial high-performance computing and “all markets that are challenged by data growth,” including financial services, life sciences, exploratory data analysis and chip design, media and entertainment, and manufacturing and internet of things.

Quobyte’s subscription pricing model, based on usable capacity, will remain unchanged with the 2.0 product release.
